So I bought some new wheels from DTD to mount a set of snow tires I already had for my wife’s Subaru. Dropped them off at Discount and told them it would be a carry out and they wouldn’t be putting them on a vehicle. I got a call a while later saying they weren’t allowed to mount them without sensors as I’ve had them do in the past. They sold me some sensors at a great price so I just went with it since it was for my wife.

So I’m looking at putting new tires/wheels on the truck this spring and want to keep my snow tires/wheels/sensors. I’m not sure I care to put sensors in the new set. Anyone else dealt with this?

It's a law that cars have TPMS now and it's illegal to make that system inoperable. They're covering their own ass.

It's illegal to make the system inoperable. If the system is already shitcanned they can do whatever they want.

Most small shops don't know of or bother to follow the law. Only a few states that have annual inspection requirements require them to be tested to pass.

This is an interesting article on the subject.

I think that was part of it. When I ordered the wheels I put in the vehicle details so they must have know it needed them.

I mean even with the lights people still can't figure it out. I saw a brand new bmw driving down the road the other day going very slowly sending giant chunks of tire into the air. People are dumb.

Most of those shops won't mount wheels on vehicles with wheel spacers on either, it's just their liability policy

    Smaller/independent shops probably won't care

A law where? The TPMS on my Taco has been inoperative both years I've owned the truck, the dash light stays illuminated due to the sensors having dead batteries. The inspection station doesn't bat an eye, they don't even mention it to me. Whether you take out the sensors, or they just don't work, the system is inoperable. Not illegal here, and NC does inspect for safety items.

It’s illegal in all 50 US states since 2008. It’s federally mandated.

Edit to add: Its only really enforced by tire stores that are covering their asses.. If it comes in with tpms it’s gotta leave with tpms..

I get that. But these were just a set of wheels and a set of tires and they wouldn’t even mount the tires on the wheels without TPMS. Even though I was going to take them home and put them on the car myself. It just seems like Discount is taking this a little too far.

Any info about this policy @Discount Tire ?

That is true, with the vehicle not there and no sensors in the wheels I don’t see why they would even mention them. Unless they just happened to know they were for a vehicle with tpms.

I didn't know they wouldn't do it without tpms? I think you can just take it somewhere else. I know my Discount tire store guys well, and they will mount them for me but have to put them on myself for liability reasons.
