    Hello All,
Asking for some advice on how to approach this.
Went in for the regular tire balance and rotation when the tire tech mentions my older tire is starting to wear.
This threw me off since I bought all 4 tires at the same time from Discount Tire.
It turns out one of the tires were manufactured in 2018 and the other 3 were manufactured in 2020, I bought them in 2020.
The tire tech looked up the invoice from I purchased them to confirm they were not used but my concern was why was I sold an older tire? Discussed with management and he had no real explanation other than the tires get into a rotation when sold but 2 years older?? I asked him so you are selling tires that are older knowing they will need to be replaced within the “recommended” 6 year mark and his response was “yes”. He offered to “make it right” by replacing the tire with a new one but then I’ll have 3 older tires. Of course he did not offer to replace all 4 tires (nor did I ask).
He feels that if nothing is wrong with the tire then everything is ok, but I feel that it’s not ok when it’s an older from when I bought them and that even I get one replaced then it’ll be mixed. I feel now I should’ve been buyer be ware but not sure how else to approach this or just let it go??

    Thoughts?

If it were mine I would be try to get store credit or a refund for the one tire and just run the older one assuming it is not dry rotted or cracking.

I wouldn't worry about the older tire myself. If it was sitting out in the weather maybe. But these being stored in a factory/warehouse shouldn't affect how it ages.

My question is why are my tires wearing unevenly.
I recently had tires rotated at Discount and tech said the same about tire wear being un even.
This of course was before I found out Discount now offers alignments.
This may seem like another way to increase sales like tire siping, but I'd pay for the alignment after spending 1500 on 4 new tires.
If you bought the certificates this older tire would also still be covered.:notsure:

    Tire inventory is fungible.
    There is no problem.
If you were concerned about the DOM that is clearly shown on the sidewall of the tires, the time to bring it was when you purchased them.

Unless there is visual evidence to the contrary (cracking, tread depth, sidewall damage, etc), I have no issue with driving on a tire that is at least 10 years old.

    2018 is old.

I’d want a refund on that tire.

You'd want a refund for a tire that was purchased 3+ years ago?

Yep. When the other tires are 4 years it will be 6.

These were from my MIL’s Pilot.

She put them on 5 years ago but they’re 7 based on DOM.

Law is 5 years or younger sadly. Typically 2 years or less is industry standard.

    There is no case here.

My own shop sold my mom 2022 tires last week, I was away and didnt catch it. It's not a huge deal, but not ideal.

I only let customers know their tires are getting old if there's a problem. Soft winter tires turn hard around this time, and cracks start to form.

Depending on environment, 2018 tires are still fine. I have a set of tires I'm selling for cheap that are 2017 with zero cracking (100$ tops date disclosed)

Tire techs know how to measure pressure, depth and dates. Thats it. They are trying to sell tires.

What are you using for a spare? The tires purchased in 2020 did you purchase just 4? What did you change from to what? The reason I ask is because knowing might open up options. And how many miles on current tires? One option: Ask for a deal on one new one that you purchase, exchange the 2018 tire for a new one (Discount covers the cost) and then use one of the 2020 ones as a spare. Then you would have 2 new ones and three from 2020. Do you park it out in the Mesa sun? Another option: Maybe just ask for a deal on 4 new ones, keep a 2020 as a spare and sell the others or make it part of the deal.

Better to keep all 4 than have mismatched tread wear with one replaced. That older tire will most likely last you the life of the other 3.

Have we confirmed that the one 2018 tire is actually wearing differently than the rest?

Some Discount Tire locations will not do any balancing, if necessary, with a tire that is 6 year old.

The tech said it was starting to wear a little more than the 2020s.
    But no cracking

I like the fact that Discount Tire offered to give you a newer tire when they didn’t have to. They took care of me when I couldn’t get my van to stop vibrating on a cross country trip. 3 stops. Three stores. Rebalance.. rotate… repeat. Never waited more than an hour. Free shitty coffee and employees who actually seemed to care about solving the problem for me. I’d feel confident that they will take care of you if you see any age related issues in the future.

This. You currently have 3 tires that are 3 years old and one that is 5 years old. If you replace that one tire you will have one new tire and 3 tires that are 3 years old. I don't see where this solves anything.

Plus as tires wear down they are about 1 size smaller in diameter with 40,000 miles on them than when they were when new. As it is all 4 of your tires have the same wear and should be the same diameter. If you put a new one on it now, it could well be in effect one size larger than the other 3 which can cause some handling issues and damage components if operated in 4X4.

Leave it as is, it isn't going to hurt a thing.

@mOjO_Taco rest assured your warranty is based from point of purchase, not by DOT numbers. Discount Tire recommends replacing tires at 6yrs, but will service tires up to 10yrs. Don't hesitate to send us a DM if you would like additional assistance.
