Want to tell a story. Late summer I had my tires balanced/rotated at my local DT. Had an appt. in and out in 45mins or so. After I got home,I had to go out to my truck for something. Something caught my eye on my wheels,so I took a closer look. What I first thought was tire mounting goo, turned out to be chips on the edge of the wheel. Upon further investigation,EVERY wheel was chipped. IMG_20210909_134012853.jpg So I returned to DT the next day,and the counter guy came out to look. He pretty much said there was no way they did it and tried to blame me. I just smiled and left. Got home, and messaged the DT rep here and told him of my dilemma. Day or so later I get a call from the manager, asking to bring the truck back in. I did the next day,he came out and inspected the wheels. He wasnt sure how it happened, but agreed it happened while they serviced it. Then he says, "well I'll order you new wheels". Thats what I wanted to hear. Wheels came in a week later and installed with no issues. So,hats off to the rep on here. Thanks alot

Yep. I caught it in the lot before I left and brought it up to the manager. He was cool about it and wanted to make it right offering to buy a replacement wheel however these SCS wheels are constantly out of stock. Long story short, I didn't collect and its probably too late for anything to happen.

Yeah, what are we looking for? Are those rhythmic ticks on the bead the damage or is it that smudge looking spot?

It pisses me off to no end when some of these tire monkeys mishandle my property when they are in the trade and should fully understand the mission. Since your tires would not have been broken down, what would they have done to damage the bead?

Maybe I should've been more clear, they are at the bead, where the tire meets the rim. How they did it? I've no idea, like I said even the manager couldn't explain it. The dingus I dealt with first acted like I drove on flat tireso_O

I see what your saying. Without being there in person, it's hard to understand what those are. The shading on either side of each mark is odd.

Does this occur on every wheel? Short of them laying them up in a tire machine, I couldn't imagine what THEY would do to create this. Did you have tape on weights prior to this happening. Have tape on weights after? Couldn't imagine someone applying the old school hammer on weights to the outside of the rim unless there was a problem trying to correct an OOR situation or something.

Mostly stock with a few minor mods.
They shmucked up one of my rims with some pretty good crescent moon like dings. I caught it before leaving. Manager had rim refinished. Looked brand new when I got it back.

Now I see the marks, indeed it looks like the clamping mechanisms dug into the rim somehow, I dunno.

The fingers that clamp the wheel in the tire removal/install tool are inboard of the wheel.

Those marks are left by the bead pressing block aka mount/demount helpers and tire lever used by the human. I have the same marks on my OR rims.

I have always had good service from Discount Tire over the years, they are always super busy and I think their guys are just trying to get most people in and out the door. I usually don't care when they are servicing my Tacoma, but this last summer, my C8 Corvette came in after a year waiting and my MRR wheels took 6 months to come in. I had the wheels mounted at Discount about 2 hours after I took delivery. I went in and told them the situation, I asked if they were busy and if they had the time and people to take extra care with my car, because I did not want my wheels damaged and they could not easily be replaced. I stressed I did not want a NASCAR pit crew. The manager was super cool, said he would put his best guy on it. When I came back with my C8, I began with, "I normally don't like to tell people how to do their job, but today I am going to tell you how to do your job....we are going to do this very slow and carefully and if you are not 100% comfortable with this, let me and your manager know now."
They took their time cleaned each wheel with a brand new rag after mounting each one. They did a great job.
