Planning on getting a 3rd gen tacoma within the next few months, but I'm wondering what is the better value. Would it be more worth it getting a 2016/17 trd off road and getting my own upgrades, or a 2020 trd off road? Is it worth saving $6k or $7k for an older model to do my own upgrades?

When I was looking, the difference was like $5,000. If you factor in the higher interest rate on a used one, no warranty, etc. Just makes sense to buy new. If paying cash that would make the decision harder. I got 1.9% apr on new, used was going to be 7% or 8%.

I hear 2016 is the worst year, I would just buy brand new

Same as echoed above. It was worth it to me, to go new to get an unmolested engine trans interior etc. Something that I could take care of, every step of the way.

I always hate saying buy new because I feel like I'm contributing to killing the resale market... BUT, it does make more sense in this case.

I still feel like the 2017 model was the best year. Has all the updates that was missed on the 2016, but doesn't have all the bullshit issues with TSS on the 2018+ models.

I think the 18 model is the best because it has all the things that they left out in the 19-20 models and has the good tech in it (TSS)

But, I think many people are bias to what year they have... I know I am

Gotta also factor in a CPO that offers a warranty up to 100k rather than 60k on the powertrain.

I guess i never factored out interest. I guess if I can get a good interest rate like that it would make sense, especially since I plan on keeping it for years.

Yeah the TSS is a pain in the ass to be honest especially if you want to do anything with the front end and or back bumper but i will say that adaptive cruise control is amazing

I always buy new just because I can. 6-7k is good size nut...from experience I can tell you a well maintain 3 year old Tacoma with 60-70k on the clock rides just as good if not better than a brand new one.

I agree. I bitch about the shifting when using ACC but I sure would miss it.

I have an 18 and wish I would have bought a 17 instead. Hate the TSS crap. Little things like greasable u-joints make a difference to me. Yes, of course you can swap the joints to greasable, but it’s stupid, IMO, to have done away with them. But ultimately, buy what you like.

Consider insurance rates too.TSS may not be great for mods but it reduces insurance rates by roughly half. My 2020 cost less to insure than a vehicle half the value without TSS.

That is your opinion my 16 is just fine zero issues but if you read all the postings everybody complains about everything on 16, 17, 18 and 19 soon you will start hearing people complaining about 2020’s. I bought mine in August 2019 used in cash and barely lost any money. New I would have lost at least 5 K by now.

    This.

I saved $4k buying my new '17 in January 2018 as the new models were rolling out.

I agree less crap to go wrong if you intend to buy and keep for a long wile. Wait until they start braking down out of warranty. If you lease you don't think about that.

2016 owner here, no problems since day 1, 44 000 km, i love this truck exept the fucking gear hunting with the transmission but you have this problem in every year 3rd gen tacoma.

This transmission is just not good, whatever the year you are buying.

I haven't noticed it on mine and I bought it used with 19k in August last year.
