Settled on 275/70/17 tires for my Gen 3 Tacoma 4x4 (going to 17 from 18)...but now I'd like to know the difference in performance according to the Wheel Width.

If a wheel comes in sizes between 7.5"-9"...which is preferred for AT?

I would "guess" the narrower the wheel, the more the tire can bulge at low pressures...am I correct?

Conversely, the wider the wheel, the less bulge (straighter the sidewall) for road driving...am I correct?

So is the "best" width somewhere in between???

    Your thoughts please.

The tires on my 18" wheels are near the end of their life.

Thanks in advance for your knowledge.

8-8.5” would be what I’d run.

Nailed the width...now, for that tire, what offset does your wheel have?

Since I live on the coast of TX, I plan to have two different sets of wheels...one for the commute/highway trips and one set for when I know I'll be off-roading.

    Thanks for your input.

Find a wheel you like and read about the wheel specs. https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/wheel-backspacing-and-offset-info.102992/

I prefer OEM wheels. You get what you pay for with wheels; cheap will not be hub-centric, heavier, poor finish, etc. Weight is important. 10lbs of rotational/braking/sprung mass is roughly equal to 100lbs of chassis weight. So if your highway/commuter wheels are, each 12lbs lighter, that's 48lbs of total weight loss and roughly equals 480lbs of chassis weight. You will fell it! your mpgs will change.

Since you want to have more than one wheelset, make sure to get the TPMS sensor four ID numbers off the 18" sensors and write them down. Your 3rd Gen already sees and has stored, aka programmed, those four ID numbers into its ECU/PCM. When you get your second set of wheels, buy four Coneable TPMS sensors, I prefer Autel MX 315mhz, and input each ID number into each new clone sensor.
When you swap wheels out, keep the unmounted four away from the truck, swap the wheels, put the unmounted wheels away, take out the owner's manual, and read how the TPMS button by your left shin does. Done. No reprogramming the truck for new sensors. I have three sets of wheels for my '17 and it works seamlessly.
