Bought a new SR5 TSS "Black" edition Inferno Tacoma out of impulse looking at used Tacomas. Got it for $27k out the door with a $4.5k trade in. They didn't have any TRD Sports, but I was wondering what is the difference?

I have a TRD Sport, but looked at the TSS's when I bought it. The TRD Sports have push button start, navigation with a larger screen, hood scoop, LED daytime running lights, darker seats with different material, hitachi shocks, TRD sport rims (TSS rims look better) and the 110 volt power outlet in the bed. Both were about the same price in Baton Rouge, so I went with the TRD Sport. My 2014 was TSS and after buying it I said my next one would be a TRD so I could get those extras.

mostly the difference between a TSS and Sport is that the TSS is based on a standard SR5. then the dealer/port starts adding aftermarket rims and other fluff to jack up the price to a sport w/o the sport standard options.

look thru the Toyota brochure and compare the sr5 to the sport to get an idea of what your trading off getting a SR5 vs a Sport.

I like the way the TSS wheel/tire/step combo looks, but I think you get more features with the TRD Sport package.

I'm so glad we don't have these non official Toyota sanctioned TSS crap here in the west coast.

Why? I'm not sure why it would or wouldn't matter.

You are right--it's just a minor annoyance. I just don't like dealer added accessories with the requisite 'up charge'. Also they put the 'TSS' sticker on it like it is some factory thing.

They are everywhere in Louisiana. I see more of the TSS model than any other. The rims, tires and window tint make them look good. But it is for a Premium price!

just my 2 cents worth,i have a bbp 16 tss package and im very very happy.i don't know about how every dealer works but in my dealer was willing to work on the cost of the tss package.for my self I wanted the trd sport (for the scoop) I didn't like the full painted front and rear bumper,i don't like the wheels at all and I would change them asap,so the sr5 was a little plain for me,the tss package was a perfect fit for me,i also was planning to lift the vehicle and would want to change the shocks as well.i feel a got the best of both world with the TSS.the only things I feel like im missing is the hood scoop and the larger screen on the inside its not a big deal for me.(oh I would like the LED lights lol)over all I love my taco.

I think the TSS concept in interesting... these dealer add-ons are not that popular in California... two advantages I can think off: 1) (presumably) the dealer will guarantee its work and 2) the owner can finance the add-ons (vs. slapping it on the credit card).

I have SR5 4x4 didn't have a TSS sticker on it but it had the aftermarket wheels, tires, side steps, the black and red interior, tonneau bed cover, bed LEDs, and it also came with the fender flares..........my buddy has a SR5 4x4 as well but its the TSS and it only came with sides steps, the "aftermarket OEMish" wheels and that was it the interior was grey and didnt have the flares. Actually I've seen very few SR5s with fender flares. I always thought only the sport models and OR models would have the flares?

There are some very notable differences between the TRD Sport and the TSS pkg.
Nothing wrong with either choice, it’s all in what you want, what you need, and what you don’t want or need.
In my case, I did not want the sunroof b/c my truck will stay outside 24/7 and I was informed by an (independent) dealer installer that they have reputation for leaks.
Moreover, it’s rather small, you loose storage on top and if I should roll it over…Oh chit!
In spite of it I do love it, and have it on my ’13 4runner that stays garaged and has proven to be solid as far as leaks go.
I could always add it if I want.
I did not want the MTS and crawl control b/c it comes with a very expensive to replace brake booster, it’s the same as the one on my 4runner, but I had it on my previous ’03 4runner that lasted 13 years with no issues at all.
But I do know of some that had them, and had to put down $$3-5k to replace.
I’d rather the less expensive tried and true vacuum type that’s on my SR5. Just MHO.
I do covet the roll& pitch gauges on the TRD, and the sport hood. But that’s about all I miss.
I don’t want the push start, (it’s on my 4runner LTD) b/c if it should go in the laundry, or pool/beach, I’ll be royally screwed.
My SR5 will still run and start until i get a replacement if the fob is damaged.
And If I had bought the TRD, I would’ve had to buy the rims & tires that’s on my TSS.

TSS is an appearance package is basically some rims, tires, step bars and a sticker that makes the SR5 looks better and allow the dealer the add about 4k to a the MSRP. the 4k extra is a big window for price negotiation given that the TSS add on cost is very low on them. so they can sell you an SR5 with TSS for 4k off the window sticker and they would have still made a decent profit. you will never get this kind of deduction on a TRD.

I figured out if I was to buy a SR5 and add new wheels, tires, step bars, and some really good for mats and added shipping, labor(maybe) is was a very little coast difference.( IMO)I would have to wait a lot longer for a NON-TSS SR5,the dealer already had the TSS on the way for the lot.Could have waited for the TRD sport and I would have replaced the wheels and tire right off the bat.and total cost of the truck was more, accesories on top of that.i really wanted a OR,The service department told me lifting a TRD OR may affect the craw control (IDK)and figured that was a expensive repair option down the road(out of warrnaty).still would not get the scoop on the hood lol. After the TSS was at the dealer they call and I come,2 other guy where standing in the show room waiting for me to see if I was buying the truck (thank GOD I had dibbs) I was love at first sight.MHO the TRD OR,TRD sport,SR5,TSS/TEXAS EDITION,ECT and sweet trucks in any color!Tacoma are flying off the dealer lot in texas, ive even hear some people are paying over sticker in my area.(crazy)but they are.i feel like was very well taken care of and had a fare dealer getting some off of sticker with people READY to take my place. So far I love my new Tacoma and really like the tacomaworld community you guy are most of the time very helpful.:headbang:
