What differences, if any are there between the 2003 and 2004 Tacoma TRD's 4WD? I was originally wanting a 2004 but I am finding more 2003's so I'm wondering if theres really any point in sticking it out for an 04'. Thanks!

Nothing substantial. Only thing I can name is that some 04's came with VSC, which I cant really describe what is, but it was a super rare option. I think it was a test for the upcoming 2nd gens. Id buy an 03 without regrets. Just check for rust.

Oh my traction control comes in the form of a clutch pedal.

Never heard of traction control on 1st gens, but after doing a little digging, I guess it's technically a thing. But it's kinda like the secret menu items at In N' Out. It wasn't in the brochures, and not a standard item. Seems like they did a soft open for it so in case there were problems with it, they wouldn't have to recall 10's of thousands of trucks.

I know there's the difference with the electronic throttlebody, but that's 02-03

Effectively no difference. They were in the middle of a complete redesign for the 2nd gens and weren't about to re-engineer it. 2003 got a new throttlebody.

I wouldn't confine your search for just a 2003-04. If you want that newer body style, and 2001-2004 will be effectively the same truck. Look more at mileage, maintenance history, and frame condition. A 2001 with complete maintenance records and 160k miles is a WAY better deal than a 2004 with 110k miles and no records.

VSC (Vehicle Stability Control) was on some 01-02 4Runners and possibly a handful of 03-04 Tacoma, judging by the rotor size options in many parts books and sensors available. I personally have not seen it on any Tacoma or heard of anyone that had the option.

What originally made you focus on a 2004? If we knew that we could probably offer more specific comments.

As others have said, and having owned both 2001 and 2003 DCs, the differences are trivial. But maybe you had something in mind?
