Figured TacomaWorld would find this as interesting as I did...

Apparently $30,000 can get you a first gen diesel engine so clean that it looks stock.

Read my signature. So you spend 30 grand to convert perfectly working pickup truck into a farm tractor. I'm in a country where every other car is diesel. Believe me, you don't want that.

When I clean my engine bay, my truck is so clean it looks stock. I just saved myself $30,000 and my truck does the same thing it did before.

Sorry for the Captain Obvious post here but for that money I'd rather have a very nice, used Duramax or Cummins full-size that WAS done right at the factory-and I'd still keep my old faithful 3.4 Tacoma for what it is in its own right.

Toyota makes an awesome diesel V8, it's just a shame they won't sell it to us.

Your statement in the post I quoted. Why wouldn't you want a diesel truck?

Gotta somewhat agree, don't see much justification in diesel swapping a first gen, especially with a 30k price tag. Props to anyone who does it, and i'd be jealous fosho, but my 5vz keeps truckin' along

30k is like 5 junkyard LS

Tacoma was built as a "family vehicle", not a "utility truck" nor the "farm truck". The street performance of Tacoma's 20+ years old engine beats equivalent even modern similar size diesel engines. When I stop at the red traffic light and I see in front of me a car or truck with TDi or TD emblems on its ass I know what will happen when the light turns green: I will not make through the intersection before the light turns red again and I will be smoked with a big black cloud. I saw only one TDi SUV that I couldn't keep up with my 24 years ol' 2.7 4-bangers: it was new Audi Q7 with 4.2 V8 TDI - very nice car by the way.

When I need to plow the field or haul 8 thousand pounds trailer, then yes, I would like to have diesel. But Tacoma does not do either of these. Diesel engine is great for long haul tractor trailers, for farm tractors or construction equipment where the agility is not a key. For driving in a city you need either something like Audi Q7 has or old trusty gas engine. Unfortunately the fuel prices are more important here than comfort of driving therefore streets are full of all kind of cars (from compact to SUVs) with wimpy, smelly and noisy diesel engines.

I am one of those guys who always run 91 in my vehicles at the Chevron I frequent. I glanced at the diesel price at the pump-it was only 10 cents cheaper per gallon than what I'm paying. These guys are paying a fortune for diesel fuel in this country especially given the idea their tanks/dual tanks are huge.

in my area I believe the diesel fuel costs WAY more than petrol at the 87 ethanol level, i will have to check

i am thinking that 91 is best to keep any future fuel injector problems at bay? some 1st gens on here are having to get the injectors redone, cleaned or replaced already in the higher mileage but I am not sure yet of their history and using higher octane and/or regular fuel injector cleaners, or dealer recommended services.

i trade off between 91 (used to have 92 here long time ago) and 87 ethanol ... even had a chance to get 93 in it this summer in Milwaukee but did not see much difference with that on the highway to home lol

You shouldn’t be putting 91 Octane in a vehicle that only requires 87 Octane.

does it cause any harmful effects?
i just don't like the ethanol stuff sitting in the tank for long periods if I don't plan burning through in a week or two

Check out the Chris fixit video on YouTube, it's pretty cool. Octance is just resistance to detonation. Save your money.

No it doesn't hurt using 91. My 142,000 mile truck is solid proof of that. I don't want to open that whole "91 vs. 87" can of worms. I personally am of the belief that using 91 sort of ensures that my knock sensors won't have to retard timing a bit to compensate for the 87. The differences are so negligible that folks who use 87 never would notice. And I shall continue happily living in my bubble:)

i just don't wish to go through the whole injector problem thing at some point in the future if at all possible, the 91 @ Shell advertises the fancy cleaning stuff that I am not sure if its in the lower grades or not :notsure:
seems to be one hellish pricey of a job to pull those injectors all off the rail and send em out to get cleaned!

In Poland 95oct gas and diesel prices are quite close to each other. One day diesel is few pennies higher, the other day 95 is. As for the fuel economy all diesel cars, SUVs and pickups have better gas mileage but it is because these engines are way undersized for the "city driving". Today I was following some small Nissan SUV with TDI emblem on it's ass. We were stuck on one lane road behind some box truck doing 40mph. When the road changed from one lane to two lanes we both jumped the the left lane to pass that box truck. I could see the driver of Nissan gave all he had (judging by the amount of smoke coming out of its ass) and I had really to hold back my "wimpy 2.7". When finally he went back to the right lane I was flying by it and still not really pushing the red line (when I need extra kick on passing I'm usually driving between 3k and 4.5k rpm).

Only to your wallet. Or let me put it the other way. You are hurting your truck because instead of putting more money into maintenance, upgrades and TLC you are wasting your dollars on overpriced gas. My truck has 321k miles now, and all it's life is drinking 87 oct gas (now in Poland I use the lowest octane and the cheapest gas that is 95 which is equivalent to 91 in US) and runs original injectors. No cleaning, no "magic gas additives" - they run like new. By the way I did not see any difference in gas mileage or performance when I moved from US 87 oct gas from ARCO AM/PM in California to 95 oct from BP in Poland.
