Ok guys, I know this has been talked about so many times, but I have a few questions I couldn't find the answer to:

    1. What engine is best to put in the first gen (2003 specifically) Taco; D4D or 1KZ-TE?
    2. Which of those two or which diesel at all works with the 5spd manual that was put in the first gens?
    3. Anyone who's does the conversion... How much did it cost, not the engine itself, but getting to engine running.
    Thanks guys

I know that, I've done an engine swap before. Just don't know much about these.
Isn't there a diesel that bolts directly into the current mounts?

The 1KZ-TE was the engine that came in the similar year Hiluxes of the time overseas. I know the A340 series autos bolt right up to them. For manuals, I’m
not quite sure. The D4D will have more power and will be more contemporary, but it’ll be a crapshoot on fitment since it’s for a newer truck.

Hmm... I don't wanna do it if I can't either use my manual (which would of course be easiest) or use a manual at all... I do not want an automatic.
Yeah I don't necessarily need more power, I would be doing it because, A. Having a diesel taco would be awesome, and B. The fuel economy of a diesel. So I very likely wouldn't go for the D4D

Your issue is I don’t think the D4D will bolt up to your R150 transmission. I don’t think those engines used that series of manual, nor do I believe the R150 is capable of handling a Diesel engine. A D4D would need to use the native transmission they came with.

The reason the A340 was used was because of its strength, they used them in the Supra MKIV all the way to Isuzu box trucks. Not trying to say you need to use an auto, but I’m just not sure what manual will bolt to that engine. You’d have to do some research.

I'm not gonna use a D4D most likely, I'll probably use the 1kz, partly because I want a manual and because of the size and cost

Oh I totally get the manual, believe me. For all I know the R150 will bolt up to it, I just can’t tell you because I’m not sure. You might need a new bellhousing.

Do you know how I would figure out if it will either bolt to it or where I could get a bell housing/adapter for it?

Just google what engines bolt up to the R150F (4WD) / R150 (2WD). Not sure if you’re v6 or I4, but the I4 was the W59. See what the 1KZ came with stock.

Bell housing adapters are not hard to make.

You just need to know what transmission to what block.

figure out what clutch and the over all length you need..

I built some parts for a Cummins 4BT into a Tacoma swap 10 plus years ago

It is a real pain if the diesel is not sold in the USA sometimes to get parts.

Not to poop on your parade, but this is a poor excuse. The amount of money diesel swaps cost are worth alot of tanks of gasoline. I mean the engine alone will probably be 4k.. Doing it for the cool factor with no false notion of "saving money" is the only acceptable option IMO

    1. For a 1st gen Tacoma, a 1KZ-TE is the most direct swap if your truck currently has the 5VZ-FE V6 engine. The 3rd gen 4Runner/Surf is essentially the same platform as the 1st gen Tacoma and came with a 1KZ-TE from the factory (model code KZN185). If you find a KZN185 donor, the engine will bolt directly to your 5VZ engine mounts on the frame.

    2. The 1KZ-TE in the Surf came mated to an R150F manual 5-speed transmission. The 1st gen Tacoma also came with the R150F model transmission. However, the bellhousings and input shafts are different dimensions between the two trucks. Your best bet is to find a complete donor engine/trans/t-case for the 1KZ-TE, and swap everything over. You will have to fabricate a new trans crossmember and new driveshaft lengths.

    3. I haven’t done the swap. But I would expect about $25k to $30k turn-key if you want to pay someone to do it right. Of course, there is always some hack that will take $5k of your money and make a mess of your truck, then call it a diesel swap.

I don’t know if they ever sold the KZN185 Toyota Surf in Mexico.
