    There's a guy on ih8mud, cnorm5623, that's done this swap using a first gen cummins he's getting around 16mpg.

    To answer part of the question, the police will not be of help. It's a civil matter since you essentially entered into a contract with him. Doesn't meet the legal criteria of a crime (theft). If he doesn't follow through you would have to file a civil case, or drive the 38 hours and kick some ass.
