Going to be upgrading my cordless tool collection, and I get a good deal when buying from Home Depot. So if you had to choose between these two, what would you choose? I have mainly ryobi stuff now but would like to start upgrading to some higher quality stuff.

Find what suits your budget/has the tools you need or might want in the future, all 3 lines are pretty extensive. I'm really liking Milwaukee's hand tools but all my power tools are Dewalt 20V and I really like them. I've abused the hell out of the 1/2" impact and the only complaint is battery life, which is understandable considering the amount of power required to get that torque.

Makita is what I want. DeWalt is what I own. Makita batteries kick all other batteries butts from what I've found out. Now my DeWalts have hung in there, but if I had a choice....it would be Makita.

i've got a DeWalt 18V 1/2" drill-driver, and AC powered 4.5" angle grinder, and they've both been workhorses. the drill is the older 18V nicad version but apparently you can use 18V liion packs in it (but need a new charger), if my batteries ever die, thats what I'll probably get.

I got a good deal on the dewalt 20v lithium ion drill and driver set (179 cdn) and have been really happy with them. You can get 5mah batteries for just about any of them now so I don't think you can go wrong with any of the major players if you stumble onto a good deal.

When my family still owned our lumber and masonry yard Makita was the way to go. They had much less failures and better customer service. I got a wicked deal on a full Dewalt set but I am not a commercial carpenter just a a occasional weekend warrior so I can't knock Dewalt too much. They are holding up just fine. BECAREFUL when buying power tools from Lowes or Home Depot because they do make "some" not all power tools specifically for them that contain cheaper parts that look exactly the same to higher end models. Please google the serial number before purchasing...

Don't buy into the "one brand makes the best whatever", get what suits you, meets your needs, and has the best features for you. When buying a new tool I look at several reviews from Home Depot, Lowe's, Amazon, and anything else I can find online. I try to get my hands on the tools at Home Depot and Lowe's and see what works for me and fits the best. I also look at wear and tear on the display models... if the display model is falling apart after being handled in a non work environment, how well do you think it will do on the job?

Edit: Just re-read your question... if I was going pure cordless I would go Makita. Sorry for the long reply.
