Geico will be the only place that will know for a fact of how they will process your specific claim.

You need to contact your adjuster and see if they will approve OE parts. For a 2018 I sure hope so.

You should be able to take it to a shop of your choice. When I got rear ended I took it to a toyota certified body shop at the dealer so I knew everything would be quoted with OEM parts. Usually the shops insurance companies push are just their preferred shops which as a result can process quotes alittle quicker but you don't HAVE to go there.

Despite it being so cheap I've had good experiences with my Geico insurance.

You can choose whatever shop you want to have do the repairs. The only benefit from having a shop that the insurance recommends, is they warranty the repairs for a period of time (sometimes life of the vehicle).

Your insurance company will want to use aftermarket (not OEM) parts for the repairs unless you have a rider on your policy for OEM replacement parts.

Did the first shop relay that news from their direct communications with your insurance, or are they saying "in general"? Talk to your agent about it, it varies by whatever policy you bought. Might also ask what the price difference is between OEM and aftermarket.

In Texas, GEICO uses “insurance quality” refurbished body parts as a first choice, followed by aftermarket new parts and as a last resort they use new OEM parts. Insurance company can also deny a claim if the insured vehicle has been altered.

Sorry to hear about your accident. Hopefully, you got some tenderized-steaks for your troubles. In my experience, a lot of shops prefer not to deal with Geico because it takes forever for the shop to get paid if there are supplements (add-ons for unforeseen repairs) on the claim. The shop I ran wouldn't deal with a Geico-insured car at all. Best of luck with the repair - it's pretty minor, so don't sweat it too much.

My 2017 got totaled at the end of January....before they totaled, I had inquired about OEM parts. Per 2 insurance adjusters, they both said insurance isn't required to use OEM if vehicle is more than 2 years old from MFR date.

This might be dependent on the state you are in, but here in WA this is how it works.

Had a Geico claim last year on my Benz. They used all OEM parts, went to the shop of my choice, and were great. No complaints.

I've had Geico for many years. Generally happy with them. My experience, confirmed by my body shop and Geico adjusters themselves is, Geico will always specify after market when they can, and even refurbished parts. It's pure economics. They're out to keep costs down, and they're not obligated to replace with OEM.

Yeah, you can use the shop of your choice (unless that's a state by state thing). Going to Toyota will make it easier to get OEM, because their own parts dept will probably supply it. The other thing is finding a body shop that has a good relationship with a Toyota dealer, which is how I made sure I got all OEM when I damaged my tailgate. Body shop guy gives them enough business that they help him out with cost on parts.

Another option is you're allowed to pay the difference to get OEM. It's not really that they *specify* aftermarket or refurb, as much as they base what they'll pay on the cost of those.
