Hi all, still new to the forum and need a bit of advice.

I recently noticed a deep chip in my paint. It’s very tiny but definitely got down to bare metal as there is visible rust showing.

I plan to get a touch up pen from the dealer. This chip is so small that I can’t imagine how to clean out all the rust without chipping out more paint. Should I chip out more with a pick to make sure the rust didn’t spread before hitting with the pen?

Are there other products I should get before laying the touchup paint on?

Would it be worth it to take the touchup paint to a body shop and have them do what’s necessary (get rid of ALL rusting, touch up, etc) given that I am a complete and total novice (and the truck is still brand new)?

Any advice is appreciated! I tried a forum search as well, but wasn’t sure given just how tiny yet deep this chip is.

    Welcome to TW, Pipdenny!
Although I am pretty new to this forum myself, I think you'll find heaps of great resources here...as well as bringing up new questions like this one.
There is this thread about SuperWhite paint failures https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/consolidated-super-white-040-paint-issue-failure-thread.689940/, but I haven't sorted through all the posts yet to find any touch-up paint related comments.

I am in a similar situation, so I will follow this thread...
In the meantime, my plan is to 1) clean surface/wax off with alcohol, 2) sand the surface rust off with sanding pen (by enlarging hole if I must), 3) dab some permatex rust treatment I have on the bare metal https://www.permatex.com/products/specialized-maintenance-repair/rust-treatments/permatex-rust-treatment-8-oz/, after good and dry 4) add light layer of touch up pen, 5) add more layers as needed to build up to surrounding paint smoothness, 6) touch up with damp clay bar or wet sand, 7) hit with clear coat.

I look forward to other suggestions/comments.

Welcome. Have you reached out to the dealership as a warranty issue? They may tell you to pound sand as once it leaves their lot it's your problem. However you never know. They may have a solution for you. YMMV.

Dupli Color, NAPA carries them. The paint match is very good. The container is kind of strange looking any way at the pointed end of the tube is a small abrasive tip that will get inside the chip very nicely then just apply the paint with the small brush that comes with it.

I haven’t tried the dealer but that’s a good idea! Worth a shot.

As for doing it myself it seems I have much to learn yet! I’ll update this thread as I go along.

I’ve read some have used a Dremel tool to clean up the area? I think that might give me a heartattack haha

    thanks all for the replies!!

For something that small just dip a tooth pick or something similar in your touch up paint and fill the chip in. With touch up jobs, especially chips like yours, the key is to fill, not to brush or paint over.

I was thinking the same. If it didn’t hit bare metal I would just fill’er up. I really wish I didn’t see any rust peeking through :bananadead:

I know it’s no biggie, just sucks that it happened so early in its life. Luckily I live in socal so the rust spreading shouldnt be a huge concern.

knowing me I will start to pick at it to find more rust and before you know it I’ve got a pancake sized bare spot on my roof because I have no idea what I’m doing

I hear ya, maybe tooth pick a dab of rust proofing primer in there, then fill her in with your color matching paint. I know you do t have a lot of room to work with. Best of luck!

edit: this guys channel has a lot of good stuff. I sift through it and use what works for me. Good starting point is all.

On the touch up paint. There should be an abrasive tip. It will clean out the rust just fine. Then as someone mentioned use a toothpick they work great for filling in small chips.

Don't sweat it. I've had plenty of these on my roof over the years. As others have mentioned, clean the rust out with an abrasive tip (even if it means removing a little extra paint with it) and fill it in. Especially with these being on the roof, nobody will see them except for you climbing up on a ladder every week to stare and obsess over them. :boink:
