debating plastidipping my rims...if I hate it or mess it up, how hard is it to remove?

Yeah I took the wheels/tires off (not the tires off the wheels)- it just makes doing them easier. I don't know if I can explain this clearly but will try. I take the blue tape and kind of make it into a little tube around the inside of the hole where the stud comes through. I really doubt if you got plastidip inside the hole it would matter but what I wanted to prevent was the stud maaaybe rubbing the plastidip and lifting it and it starts to come off the wheel - doubtful that would happen but I just wanted to be sure. Plastidip pros know that it will peel off easy and clean along edges and seams which is why it it is so popular - I have found it some spots like skinny window trim pieces for example - sometimes when peeling it off along the edge it will come off the piece you are trying to actually Plastidip - frustrating. In those places I use blue tape the same way I would with paint and before the plastidip is completely dry (give it a few minutes ~5) I peel off the blue tape to get a clean line without pulling off the Plastidip on the piece I want it on. But on wheels and chrome emblems that is not necessary. BTW you can tape off the tire from the wheel but I didn't - the plastidip peeled right off the rubber right along the wheel edge clean.

Hyperdip is smoother (more factory looking), choice of shine type finish, and supposed to be stronger...

Blackout package - planned: black bed logos, black wheel vinyls, front seat window tint, tires.
Truth...and, if you don't get it done right, they don't last.

Thank You for the Hyperdip info - may try it in the future; everything I have put the Plastic Dip on has pealed! Some I wanted to, some not. In general, no harm was done and easy to get off when wanted.

I did. i just put some plastic bags behind the wheels when spraying. You can stick playing cards in the tire bead if you're concerned about overspray onto the tires

Update: I sold my O.R. rims with the Plastic Dip still on them. When the buyer bought them from me, we peeled part of one of the rims, and seemed to come off real easy. Now, I kinda wish I peeled them myself and asked more money for them.

I plastidipped the wheels on my jeep. It was easy to do, and stayed on until I needed new tires. Of course, the tire shop butchered it and I had to peel it off, which was easy, just a bit messy in places. As far as the lug holes, you do have to cover them. If you try to spray in the hole, then screw on the lugs, it will pull the dip and cause lifting. I made that mistake. My solution was to just spray it with the lugnuts covering the holes, but pull them off before it dries. That way it prevents drying and "coating" both the nut and friction area and does allow for the friction area (against the nut) to be dip free, hence no pulling when tightening.

    i didnt read comments above

I hate plastidip but i found a neat way to remove it from wheels. Soak in WD40 and hit it at medium/far distance with pressure washer but the aftermath is messy and youll be finding plastidip all over your driveway and clogging your gutters. Platidip looks super ugly afterwards when it starts attracting brake dust and dirt. itll look nasty dry and brown.

    Again, i hate plastidip.

Heard it comes off super easy if you pre soak with wd40 and then just scrub it off

I have used Plastidip for years - the trick is to take your time with light coats. If you take your time and let it build up it will be very durable. Now that said I never put it on wheels just to black out chrome. The chrome black out on my 2018 Outback has lasted 5 years and it's been though car washes etc.

Interested in everyone's opinions on using plastidip or finding a vinyl sticker to cut myself in an effort to take the chrome bits on my Sport wheels and turn them bronze... Would anything work well vs spending the money on wheels?

FWIW they make vinyl “inserts” for the off road wheels to delete the chrome. I have no experience with them, but might be worth considering if you don’t wanna do the spray on route (whether that’s plastidip or alternative)
