Took my 2021 Tacoma in for an oil change and rotation today. This is my first one after my Toyota Care expired. I had a $25 off coupon so I thought I'd take advantage of it. After the service was done I paid and then left to run some errands. I noticed that the next service due sticker was at 5K miles. The owner's manual specs say an oil change every 10K miles. They used 0W-20 oil (same as previous oil changes). All of my previous oil changes showed the next oil change was due at 10K mile intervals.

Just thinking that now that my Toyota Care has expired they are trying to get me to come in every 5K miles when it's not really needed. Anyone else experience this at their local Toyota dealership?

Normal. The 5k "normal duty" service is just a tire rotation and a fluid check/ top off. They don't change the oil on the 5s unless you pay extra. Optional whether you want to pay someone to do that for you.

... However, I'm guessing you're at 30k now. Did you get your differential fluid serviced? :boink::D

It depends on your usage, that little sticker is not law, if you do a lot of towing, or haul a lot of weight, you may need to change it every 5K. If you're doing light driving, freeway, general commuting, then 10K is fine. Not every action is an intentional attempt to scam you, it could have been a mistake, but in the end, that little sticker doesn't mean anything if you know it needs to be done at 10K for your driving style.

Toyotas service interval is 5K, oil change interval is 10K....You can take a look at the 5K interval service checks in the manual. ..My dealer puts 5k service interval stickers on the window every time since the first mile, since the service interval is 5K...If anything the dealer was trying to keep you from getting your 5K interval services when you were under toyocare.

    They already got ya!!!!

Ok..yes....now that I think about it that's what they might have done previously...5K tire rotation, 10K oil change.

the OCI is either 10K or 5K miles, depending on use as others mentioned above. toyota doesn't recommend 10K OCI anymore than they recommend 5K OCI.

read the criteria, figure out where you fit in, and change it at that interval. if your use is in-between, err on the side of caution and change the oil sooner is my recommendation.

    Bingo.

It's insane how supposedly smart adults get bent outa shape over basic common sense stuff. "Omg the window sticker says 5k! Those crooks!"

Oil changes are cheap. Crate engines are not.

They are after you, if you hear the voices, immediately pull over to the side of road and start screaming at the windshield.

Do not move the vehicle until someone stops to help you…

Depends on how many miles you put on in a year/6 months. I'm a relatively low mileage guy, usually around 5k a year. If I held with the 10K change it would be every two years. Nope, I change twice a year.. Yeah yeah, some might think I'm wasting money. I don't care it gives me piece of mind, especially since we seem to be in perpetual construction mode with a fair amount of dust in the air.

The common wisdom is to change your oil every 10K miles or every year, whichever comes first.

They usually want you every 5k for tire rotation.

Not always an option. Like where I live we aren't allowed to do any sort of maintenance that could make a mess in the parking lot. Can't even wash them if we even had a hose hook up.
