Just bought a Taco less than 3 weeks ago. Long story short I was looking back over the paperwork because the payment seemed a bit high to me at the time and I am looking to get it refinanced in a week. I saw that I was being charged $2845 for TMIS VSA which is an extended warranty according to google and another $975 for a prepaid maintenance plan which goes up to 36k miles. I was told "these are standard and included in the MSRP" I did not think much of it because most companies do have a pretty basic warranty for 2-3 years. I figured Toyota was just being reasonable with their product because most people don't have an issues with their Toyotas for at least a few years. If not much longer. So has anyone else cancelled these things? Toyota website says they are able to be canceled within 30 days so monday I will be making phone calls. Lastly they put some product on there called ECP (entire car protection) and once again said that it is "standard" with their vehicles. Cost $1499 and their website says non refundable because its "already on the vehicle" anyone deal with these morons? I never heard of them before now and I have no interest in dealing with them other than to get my money back from them. I have a local shop that my family has dealt with for 30+ years and I am getting them to detail it, undercoat it and do all the work to it.

    That's your best hope.

I think you're correct. 2 of the 3 should be able to be cancelled.

Recommendation to all. Know what you're signing before you sign.

    Ouch! The stealership gotcha.
They prey on people who just dont know. Sorry to hear that.
Go back and fight them. I bet there was a salesman and sales manager giving each other high fives when you left.
Those people are scum of the earth. I used to work in dealerships and have seen it all including the high fives.
They told me it is the art of the sale. The bigger the burn the better. Its like a badge of honer between salesmen.
    Bragging rights at your expense.

First time I bought a truck a few years ago, the dealership I dealt with did not do this. The price on the window was what I paid. They did ask if I wanted the extended warranty and all that crap and I said no. So I paid sticker plus tax and title/registration fee. I learned my lesson though. Ill be getting most of my money back at the least. Will try to get it all but the protectant crap one will be much more difficult.

I had this happen when I bought my Honda Goldwing a bit over a year ago. Dealer put an extended warranty on which I expressly said no to, and didn't even list it as a line item on the invoice. They just buried the cost elsewhere. I only found out when I got the welcome letter from the warranty company. I called the dealer and got ghosted, so I called DMV and filed a complaint against their vehicle dealer license. I got a call from a DMV investigator to ask a few questions, and 2 days after that I was on the phone with the dealership general manager getting an apology and assuring me the warranty would be canceled. I got a refund check for the warranty about a week later.

Like they say "The house always wins". The dealers sell cars day in a day out. The average consumer buys a new car every now and then. Who do you think has the advantage here.

In a former life I worked for a Honda dealership. I sold for a few years and then did F&I. We were an honest dealership and would have never dreamed of treating people like this. I'm sorry it happened to you.

You have a shot at getting all your money back. Here's my advice.

1)Like others have already stated, some of those items can be canceled with a simple phone call. Do that ASAP. A week after you do it, call those numbers again and make sure it's been done.

2)EMAIL (don't call, you want a paper trail) the dealer's GM or sales manager. Objectively point out what happened, leaving the emotion out of it, and request your money back for a product you didn't agree to purchasing. Make no threats. If you use more than 5 sentences you've gone too long. Ask for a response and resolution and set a date.

3)When #2 fails (because it likely will) follow up with another email. This time state that you will be contacting every agency that you can think of to report the underhanded practice. You will be making reviews on google and yelp. You will be contacting the state attorney general. You will look up any regulatory agencies in your state that cover the car dealerships and contact them. You asked nicely for a resolution and didn't get it.

4)Make good on that threat. Ironically, I had pretty rotten repeated experiences with a Honda dealer where I now life (I was naive to think that they all functioned the way my previous employer did). While you might not experience the same as me, publishing long and detailed reviews on the internet got their attention quickly. Within a day of publishing reviews on yelp and google the general manager was calling me and fixed the problem. Mind you, I'll never darken their door again.

5)Definitely refinance your loan ASAP. The dealer that ripped you off made money off the financing. Here's the rub- if you pay off the loan in the first 6 months, the dealer gets back charged. So if all else fails, at least you've taken some money out of their pocket. Same holds true for canceling those other products. They will get back charged for those as well.

Again, sorry that this happened to you. Buying a car should be fun and it shouldn't be a time when you need to have your guard up. Happy to answer any questions. Good luck!

Back in the day, I'd say you'd been had. In these days of public Yelp and Google reviews and the blunt requests from dealers for nothing but 5 star reviews to their manufacturers, I'd give them the opportunity to rethink. Ask for a meeting with the GM, the Salesman and the F & I Rep. Face to face. "I've cancelled the Extended and Maintenance, request the ECP price be reduced to cost." No demanding, not even a raised voice. A simple "we all know what went on here, this is your chance to correct things before I write public and manufacture reviews".

Had you bought one of the extendeds or just the ECP, that's one thing. Pretty clear what happened with you "buying" all three. Imagine the manufacturer will be interested in the "sales" job as well.

There's a reason that "good" F & I folks are the second highest paid employees at dealerships.

Yeah, I agree with most of the other commenters here, in that you should be able to get the extended warranties refunded. As far as the ECP protection which you said was $1499, I mean, the thing that GLARED at me when I was reading that, was "how in the world could you not SEE that when you were pricing out the vehicle"? That was a CLEAR ripoff, no doubt in my mind about it. I did my homework on my tacoma literally for months before I bought it, and so I knew what came on the trucks, and what was optional. Still though, I didn't even know about some of their "offerings" until it came time for doing the paperwork. They offered the extended warranties for sure, but I declined because they actually STARTED running at the same time the truck's own warranty did! So there was really no extension for the period stated at all, as several years of it were already covered! But they also offered me a tire replacement warranty, which covered flat tires, etc. If I had a flat tire, they would replace the tire completely, regardless of mileage. I did consider that, as I have had SO MANY flat tires over the years with other vehicles we own! But I ended up not getting it, and right now, I am glad I didn't buy it because I have not had one flat tire on my tacoma since buying it almost 3 years ago this year. But they also offered me a 10 year warranty on the electronics. I also considered that, but declined because again, the first few years of it were already covered under the regular warranty. But I admit that the electronics on the truck do worry me down the road, if something goes wrong with them. I mean, there is no doubt in my mind that at the very least, I can see the screen displays burning out of ceasing to function sometime down the road. I can only imagine trying to get a replacement screen when that happens, as I am one of those people who keeps a vehicle for decades. Bottom line here, is that you do seem to have been ripped off, but at the same time, I think a good part of it was that you were not diligent in reading the paperwork, but were blinded by the beautiful new truck that was about to be delivered to you!

I also fell in the same trap. I drove from Florida to Texas to get my Blue color (long story!).
I paid $1939 for the Premium Wrap 72mo/95,000 mile Prepaid Maintenance and $3047.00 for Platinum Extended Warranty 84 mo/125,000 mile. Found out the company with the Extended Warranty only covers maintenance at the Dealership where purchased!!

Longer story short...I cancelled both within 30 days without issue. Purchased Through Toyota a 96mo/125,000 mile Extended Warranty for $1265.00!
Lesson, Need to read the contract before signing the bottom line. Slow the roll!!

Good advice above. No real experience - but stay firm and realistic.

My ONLY .02$ - and yeah I know - but - all our vehicles we pay cash. This does NOT get a deal in 2022, BUT I will just say this: Man, when you pay cash you REALLY pay attention to the total COST, not a payment amount and study every word on every paper.

Let the arrows fly at me. Just some advice is all. Yes, we save our $ (retired now) - forgo this or that. Even sell a gun or three to have the car cash without touching our other savings.

Is it an actual Toyota factory extended warranty? If so, how did you manage to purchase it with a Florida home address? We are in the Southeast Toyota Mafia....errrrr...Distributor area and aren't supposed to be able to get Toyota factory warranties or deal with Toyota Financial Services. If you were able to I'd like to know how so I can look into it :)

If the price on the window is what you paid, the window sticker included the three items you mentioned.

Not usually. Window sticker will have MSSRP and any dealer add ons or markup. It should have had the protection package listed usually on a supplemental sheet or listed below MSRP. Extended warranties are typically added when you are filling out the paper work and doing financing.

My point was that OP said he paid the price listed on the window sticker, therefore every option he paid for had to have been listed there for that to be a true statement. Or else he would have paid *more* than the sticker. Obviously we’re not talking about the normal extras, tax/title/license etc here as far as paying over sticker.

What I’m strongly implying is that I don’t think OP actually did pay the window price. Along the lines of what you said, it’s likely the warranty was an add on. The maintenance package was probably an add on as well.

I pay cash too. This go-round it helped that I did have a sizable insurance check from my totaled loss to put towards a new vehicle.

And I also know that not everyone is in the same position to do that but it's definitely an advantage paying cash because it's like looking at a grocery store receipt. It's four line items: price of vehicle, taxes, title & registration fee, and document fee (which I abhor). That's it! If the dealer tried to sneak anything past me, it would be additional line items. And they did try to sell me all that crap: extended warranty, prepaid maintenance plan. But the finance guy was nice. I think he sensed I did my homework so he didn't continue pushing it on me. And in the end, when I signed the paperwork, the price quoted me at the beginning was actually $25 more than the actual payment.

Much success in getting your refunds back! As everyone said, I feel you will get the first two back easy.

So, they added nearly $4500 and you didn't notice. Was the purchase price msrp?

This is a classic symptom of New Car Fever! It starts with shortness of breath and heart palpitations and the victim will sign just about anything without reading it to get their ass in that new ride!

Sorry you were taken advantage of OP. Try to get this stuff refunded and check this off as a serious life lesson. Read, question, and understand before you sign anything!!!

Stock wheels and suspension. Random "utilitarian" mods featured on this great forum.
I had a fun time getting them to explain why I needed a maintenance plan that paralleled the factory 2 year one for part of its coverage. I can't blame them for trying to sell services; it's how the dealership makes money. Can't imagine being a salesman right now with 5 new cars on the lot.
