    Hello,

I’m a long time lurker, first time poster. After owning a gen 3 4Runner for many years, I’m getting ready to buy a new Taco.

The question I have is what have you guys seen for a dealer “accessories” charge? The place I’m working with is trying to add this to my out the door price:

    NSD CLEAR VIS W/SHLD $899
    PP PAINTLESS DENT $499
    WHEEL LOCKS $119

Is it common for dealers to try and sell windshield replacement coverage and on a new vehicle? And what the heck is “PP PAINTLESS DENT”?

Just trying to get some opinions before I do battle with these guys over this stuff. Thanks!

Lol. That is like selling you nitrogen performance fill for your tires. Just super high margin add ons for more profit. If it were me I would tell them I don’t want it.
If its already installed then you can negotiate their price way down. If they say no, well then you are overpaying for extras you don’t really need.

LOL, fuck all that noise. I would ask them to remove them all and refuse to pay that. Make them explain what it is and even if they say they can't remove it refuse to buy it as you did not order it. Welcome by the way.

Maybe agree to eat the locking lugs as the factory ones are nice and though overpriced not the end of the world or worth adding yourself if you intend to keep the factory wheels. That's about as far as I would meet them on that list.

Not sure about the wind shield and Painless stuff.

When I got mine, I have them remove stuff I didn't want to pay (predator steps, all weather floor mats, I think there was something else) I knew I could change for the fraction of the price they were charging.

    Oh look, another mod....
I had a dealer a few years ago try to charge me this when I was thinking of buying a Honda Accord. I asked the salesman to explain each item to me, and as he did...I Googled the price. After the guy mentioned the 3rd item, he gave up and said "We'll throw it all in at no charge sir."

I still didn't buy the car.

    Awesome, thanks guys.

They are also trying to charge me $4829 for the TRD lift, LOL. This is why I absolutely hate buying cars.

LOL, when I purchased my wifes Tahoe in 2018 they had an $1,100 charge for some special wax coating they claimed they added. I had already seen it on the invoice so when I got to the showroom I asked the salesmen for a bottle of water. As I was coming in to finalize the sale he obliged happily. Handed me a bottle with the dealers logo on it and everything. I walked out to the car for the final inspection before completing the purchase and ask him to explain what the coating does. He pretty much explained what ceramic coating does and by looking at the car I could tell it did not have that. I took the cap off the bottle and started pouring it on the hood. When none of the things he explained happened I said "so I guess we will just remove that charge?". He said "I'll take care of it" and that was the end of that.

Dealerships (most) use a lot of tactics to get as much of your money as possible. It's why so many people call them "Stealerships". They've earned the moniker.

    1) Market Adjustments or Regional Adjustments.
    2) Add ons & Aftermarket accessories installed by them.
    3) Extended Warranties
    4) In house financing.

All of these have inflated costs by 40 - 60%. But I get it, we all have to make money. But they won't make it off of me. They do it because people fall for it. It's a lot like those phone calls you get from scammers saying you owe the IRS money.

No money, all went to truck...
What is the first one? A coating?

For the dent repair, how long is the warranty? That's actually not too bad of a price. If they will fix all dents over a certain period of time? Maybe worth it. My friend had a shopping cart run into his Camry. Got it fixed for free. Made back his money in that single repair.

The locks is strictly up to you. I've never had my wheels stolen so I never got them.

They should never add that stuff without asking you though....

In the mid 90's a buddy bought a new 2wd Toyota pickup. He showed up all proud. Bitch was basic AF! We were like dude, where the fuck is the rear bumper? LOL, that little truck sure could take a beating though.

With the way things are with new car buying these days I doubt there will be much of a battle, you'll say you don't want the stuff and they'll say "ok, see ya later"
At least you caught it before you got it home, realized you got screwed and started calling lawyers

Better than the mandatory 7k lift kit I was told by one of the dealerships that actually had inventory.

Fortunately they were cool about it and are removing the stuff I don’t want from the final price. They’ve been very reasonable about everything else, I can’t complain.

My understanding is the first one is just windshield insurance.

    Run.

Yes, and no. They will replace it, but on their terms. Read the fine print on that one. They are trying to sell you a "protective coating" more than windshield insurance. Your insurance deductible should be cheaper and cover it. They will also default you to a 5 year cost instead of a 3.

Lets put it this way: whatever they are trying to sell you, is junk and don't buy it. It's how dealers make their money and none of it is in your best interest. You'd be better off stashing away a rainy day fund for major repairs that are unlikely in the first place.

Even a good dealer will add this stuff on - or try to.

These days dealers are purposefully installing more accessories on new trucks so that they can make more money. Unfortunately, you have no power to say remove the accessories now. I purchased my taco right before the craziness. I asked them to remove the mud flap, running board and floor mat. I told them remove it or I would walk out. They had no choice but to give it to me for free. You can’t do that now. They will tell you to kick rocks. So, if you need the truck now, you’ll pay $1500 for an accessory that you don’t need. Or look for a different dealer.

When I picked a dealership to put a deposit down, I specifically wrote down no dealer added accessories (stain treatment, paint protection, nitrogen in tires, anti theft devices, window tint, etc.) on the pre purchase agreement along with the price and had them sign it.
