The seat belt chime in my truck drives me nuts at times, and I have been interested in a reversible, easy DIY way of stopping it.

I had my seats out of the cab to wash my seat covers, so I decided to do some investigation.

To accomplish this task, you must understand how a seat belt chimer knows to chime. Inside the seat belt housing there is a plunger that your belt presses in. It actually pretty simple when you look at it. So how do we make this plunger permanently pressed?

You need to remove your seats to access the seat belt housing

Using a socket, remove the belt attachment housing from the seat.

Using a small screw driver push in the tab to allow the sensor to be removed

You can now slide the sensor out of the large grey housing for the buckle.

Using your small screw driver push in the tabs to remove the sensor cover.

I chose to remove the small circuit board to make sure there was no way to damage it.

Looking at the plunger.....The white part is pushed in by the metal of your buckle. The top left section contains a small magnet that is sensed when in the buckled postion by the circuit board I popped off before.

Here you can see the plunger pressed in all the way. On the non magnet side of the plunger, figure out how far in the plunger slides.

Based off your looking at how far the plunger goes, drill a small hole in the outside of the plunger housing.
    20160630_221918_zpsdvvjmudj_b3ceacf8ddf06fb14e4d45a95b4afc2ece1070e0.jpg

Slide a small zip tie through the hole, with the plunger depressed. It will prevent the plunger from moving outward.

I didn't get a non blurry pic unfortunately, but using a set of wire dikes, cut off the zip tie where it comes out of the housing on the outside. There is no need to actually put the zip tie through its end and tighten. There is not enough room for this, and you basically made a pin through the hole to keep the plunger back.

Since the zip tie slightly sticks out of the housing I needed to trim a small spot in the side of the housing.

Slide the plunger back into the seat belt housing, and snap the cover back on.

Bolt the seat belt housing back on and reinstall your seats.

My seat belt chimer no longer goes off. Please don't tell me to just wear my seat belt, sometimes people have reasons for not wearing one. For instance I quite often have a gallon water jug on my passenger seat. That is enough weight for the seat to think there is a person and set off the passengers alarm....

There are easier ways posted on here that involve just removing the spring. I just disconnected the plug under the seat on my driver side. This does not work on passenger side because it also disables air bag.

Any way this mod might affect the air bag system?

I wanted it to be without the dealer. That require me to pay them, and I didn't feel like going there.

The ways that I saw was have the dealer do it with the computer, or remove the speaker from the dash. I didn't see anything on removing the spring anywhere. My way can be undone with needle nose pliers in a minute.

OME 885, dakar leaf pack. 265/75r16 duratracs "c". Back up camera. Scan gauge. Husky floor liners. Cal trend canvas seat covers. Topper and tacoma bed mat. Tailgate skin and cap. Differential breather mod. Intermittent wiper switch. Redline hood struts.
As did I. As I understand it if you ever reset, battery change or something like that, the chime would come back. Would be nice if we could get into program from home and change chime.

It does not work with newer trucks.

Now it's either Tech Stream, dealer, or janky modding.

2012+ are ecu based as far as controls for seatbelt chime.

the way described above might affect airbag deployment etc. Have the dealer do it or do it yourself.... i can turn mine on or off in about 2 minutes with my laptop

Laptop with techstream cable, and techstream software.

Or you can do it with the proper commands over a bluetooth OBD reader + telnet on a laptop / android phone

Doing this makes the truck think the seat is always occupied. How would that effect the air bag? If the truck is driving, I am in the driver seat so its correct....
