I recently got a 2015 Tacoma (previously had a 2002) and want to install a dash cam. I was searching the forum and found threads about people plugging them into their rearview mirror with a plug but mine doesn't have such a plug. Is that a 3rd gen thing or were there 2nd gens that had power in the mirror for things like outside temp etc?

What are my options besides running a cable to the 12v?

    How about the rear?

Some 2nd gens do have 12v power to the mirror, and there is a plug on the back of it, but as far as I know no one makes a harness for it like they do on 3rd gens.

Mine didn't have power, so I ran a 12v line up the drivers side A pillar. The cam I bought has a rear cam too, and I ran that wire down the passenger side A pillar so there wouldn't be interference. The rear cam I had didn't need its own power, but if you got one that does you can tap into the 12v constant in one of the rear taillights.

Is your rear camera powered from your front camera?

Where did you mount the rear camera?

As a thought. I assume you have an overhead console with dome lights.

Could be a handy place to tap 12V power and ground.

Yes thats where I tapped in for my 12 volt source. There actually two different 12 volt supplies one will turn on with key and the other for some funny reason turns off when you put your lights on. I bought one of those 12v sockets with a pigtail and and got my power and then tucked all the excess wire in the headlinerB99A6625-7316-4525-9BAC-BAC0828F1D37.jpg

Yes, it connects to the front camera via a mini USB port. I zip tied it to the top of my hitch. I'd like to figure out a way to just use the stock back up camera but it just seems overcomplicated.

Chances are very good this is the case. You can remove your overhead console and take a peek for the harness up there.

That would be the ground side of the light. There is constant power to the dome and map lights and the ground side is switched. So, when have power on the ground side, that’s feeding through the bulb from the power side.
