Mine came on yesterday when I left for St. Augustine.

Called the dealership yesterday, and they said to bring it in.

Sat there for an hour just to hear it was my gas cap. Told the dude I filled it up last week, and already burned half the tank. Why would the damn check engine light come on because of the gas cap a few days after I got gas?

Get a code reader. First time it tells you what the cel means and saves you from hours of stress or your entire trip/vacation it'll be worth every penny.

EVAP codes take multiple drive cycles and are dependant on fuel tank level. EVAP cycle will not happen on over 3/4 tank

Loose gas caps have been triggering engine lights for years now, maybe since the beginning of OBD-II diagnostics... it's an emissions control thing.

You have to be sure to tighten until it clicks.

    Always make sure it clicks.

If I get a code reader thing, can I turn the damn light off myself?

I saw a thread here that listed a code reader you used with your phone.

Some you can, i believe. I know you can turn the maintenance reminders off. Usually a check engine light is there for a good reason, though.

I have a cheap code scanner and it also a ScanGuageII. Both can read and clear codes.

This. Certain criteria need to be met before the ECU will pull a vacuum on the tank and look for EVAP leaks. I think it's somewhere around a half a tank, but I forget now.

Yes, just put the truck in ACC and clear the code on the reader. Done
