I recently started getting a misfire from cylinder 2 from my 2005 Tacoma. Pulled out the old spark plugs and installed new coils and plugs. Still am getting the same misfire code from the scan tool. Also did a compression test on all cylinders, averaging 150-152 for each one. Thinking about switching out the old fuel injectors for new ones. Read around that it is possible that the old spark plug gaskets may be worn. Also attached an image of the old spark plugs (cylinder 2 misfire on left) Any helpful tips are appreciated!

Those look like platinum or iridium plugs. Change them out with recommended copper plugs. They have less resistance and the ignition system matches the copper plugs.

    So your getting a P0302?
    Do you feel it misfiring?
Those plugs look kinda oily, are your spark plug tube seals leaking?

    The 2.7L uses Iridium plugs.
    The 4.0L uses Copper plugs.

I missed the 4 cylinder. You are correct.

Yeah, I've been getting the P0302, just on that cylinder 2
I had felt it pretty rough when driving at anything faster than 65 mph, and then that CEL would light up signaling the P0302 code
I tried to "reset" the ECU idle rpm reading by just disconnecting and reconnecting the battery. However, it would then stall after a minute of reconnecting the battery. Don't know if that means much.
If both plugs look leaky, wouldn't that mean that both of the respective cylinders are misfiring? or no?

So I think you might want to check fuel pressure at that injector, but also I must ask, when did you last replace your valve cover gasket? Part of the gasket has the little o-rings that go around the spark plug holes....over time they can start to leak oil into the cylinders.

Ill check out that injector later this week, and see what's up with it.
BUT I have not changed that valve cover gasket since I bought it (about 2 1/2 years ago) but previous owner did not mention replacing the valve cover gasket, so I am assuming it has never been changed.

Just based on what I'm seeing in that picture I think your getting oil on that plug.

Since you've already changed out the plug, coil and did a compression test I would do a quick voltage check at the injector for that cylinder.

Maybe a voltage check at the connector for the coil harnesses as well.

The crush gasket on the plug on the right hasn’t even been crushed?
That’s not likely your problem, as the misfire stated before the “new” plugs.
But I’d make sure the plugs are tight

Not a bad idea but problems in a coil circuit will typically set P035x codes.
It's strange the misfire only occurs at high speed, ignition misfires typically occur during high loads and injector misfires are typically constant.

Im guessing that the valve cover gaskets needed replacing, as well as the plug o-rings, as there is oil pressure build-up when going at high speeds, ill replace them, and let yall know.

Something I’ll do when replacing plugs, snug it down, back off and snug it again, repeat until it doesn’t go any further. It usually goes in another 1/2-3/4 turn. My guess is some smutz on the threads, the old plugs backed out some, or I’m smashing the hell out of the gasket.

Hey OP, I'd be interested in finding out what you determined the problem to be. Mine is throwing the same error code with an occasional rough idle on start but then goes away and is fine for a few days. Haven't had a chance to check it out. Weird...

I had a GMC Canyon with similar symptoms. If it was warm (not fully up to temp) and you started it (as if you drove, let it sit, and then needed to go somewhere again) it would start very rough and sometimes even stall. It also came with a very rich fuel smell and a puff of smoke out the back until it settled out.

I traded the truck before it got fixed, but later research determined the cause was likely a leaky fuel injector. Perhaps this is something that could be affecting you.

Black plug means running rich usually unless its from oil.

is your MPG bad? If yes I would swap 2 an 3 out for a few 100 miles and look at the #3 plug to see if black

At first, I thought it might be a coil going bad, so I swapped the coil for #2 with the one next to it. I also pulled the plugs, but they looked pretty good because they were replaced not that long ago when I replaced the valve cover gaskets (maybe 3-4 months ago). Issue remains.

Hey guys, for what it's worth, I had a buddy perform a compression test on all cylinders and they averaged 172-175. Replaced the one injector and put in a new seal kit and so far, no issues with rough start and no CEL. Thanks for the feedback.
