Hey guys I am new to this sight and I figured this would be the best place to ask seeing as most of the things I look up I end up finding on this site. Now I was wondering if you guys could help me i have a 2007 4x4 tacoma and see i recently was under my truck to change the oil pan and before I screwed with the oil pan or anything at all (it was not leaking) I looked over and I noticed some fluid that had pooled up on the bottom of part of my front axle. More specifically the part that is inboard of the cv shaft. So I kept an eye on it and I noticed I was getting a couple drops a day in my driveway from it so I was wondering if you guys could tell me what might be the problem in there or even what makes up that part? I was researching online and couldn't find anything so before I go in and tear into it and take the cv shaft and everything out to try to find out I was wondering if maybe you guys could tell me anything before hand. My best guess would be that it is some type of rubber of ring or seal. So if anyone has had this problem or anything I would sure love to know. Thank you guys in advance hope the pictures somewhat help I'm no professional photographer. Sorry if I didn't explain it very well if you have questions I can definetly try to explain! Thanks again 20160412_185811.jpg 20160412_185824.jpg 20160412_185830.jpg 20160412_185847.jpg 20160412_185852.jpg 20160412_185859.jpg 20160412_185914.jpg 20160412_185928.jpg

Thank you very much! Appreciate it when you took everything off did you have a lot of differential fluid leak out and did you drain and refill it?

You want to drain the diff. A little more oil may come out when you pull the seal so have a catch pan ready. That is a pic of my seal and I may have driven it too deep :)facepalm:). You can use a small drift or punch to carefully drive it in, working around slowly, just be careful to set it even.

So I have it all ripped apart and the old seal out. How in the Holy hell did you guys drive the new one in evenly with out damaging the inner rubber portion?? I'm really stuck on it is there a special tool or anything

Carefully. I used a small punch working my way around it slowly. But the best way would be find a piece of PVC or ABS tube that fits over that dust lip.

This is the seal I got from that part number is looks a little different from the one that, come off but is the exact same size and everything. The outside on this one is metal as where the old on is part rubber on the outside. I just wanna make sure this looks right to you guys. I tried going around it with a small punch but it didn't work very well so I will have to go get some pvc pipe

It should be rubber. That doesn't look like the right part

I used a 2" ABS coupling to drive mine in and it worked easy peasy, just make sure to grease the spring on the inside so it doesn't fly out and grease the outer part of the seal so it slides into the differential easier.

As mentioned, make sure to drive it to the correct depth (not too far though) otherwise it will leak

Ok ya I thought the seal definitely looked different but the seal that your talking about that are in those pictures, is that the seal that connects to the cv shaft or is that the end that goes into the differential

I have used the old seal as a driver, then a small block on top of that.

This method worked best for me. Even after trying to use a seal setter that ECGS recommended. Using the old oil seal method that James recommends worked best!

Try to get it as deep as the old seal was and make sure you do not put it in to deep.

That's the seal that goes into the differential

Help. I think. I put in the ecgs bushing and prying th axle out i bent up the flimsy rim type thing. Is that a huge issue?

Also put in new seal and a very small portion of the lip is protruding and there is a tiny tear in the lip.

My advice to anyone is get a chisel and go from those small corner edges that are on the inner side. After hours, east coast said try it. BANG! It came free.

The flimsy thing is just a dust shield, no biggie.

Screwdriver or a set of pliers. Just make sure you don't score the diff housing where the outer part of the seal seats against the machined surface.
