Most of them don't. I torqued to 120 ft*lbs and then gave it a bit more with my breaker bar. Wheel is still attached over a year later.

You know how many posts there are of people saying "use the search function"? Why did you think your version would work?

Instead of making a useless, unhelpful post, how about you just move on to the next thread.

At least OP was asking a question related to doing his own wrenching. Presumably, because he's in the middle of a project. Maybe he needed a more immediate answer and was unsuccessful searching.

Look at it this way, at least it wasn't another tire size post.

It’s not too bad if you give it some limitations like title only and a specific forum. Avoids getting every post from the last 20 years with the word torque in it.

    3 ways to tighten it.

    1. Use a thick screwdriver inside the center of the rotor (fins). Wedge against caliper and tighten.

    2. Put wheels on vehicle but remove center cap. Put vehicle on the ground and tighten axle nut with wheel on.

    3. Have a helper hold the brakes while you tighten the axle nut.

Edit: Shoot, didn't realize how old this thread was lol.

    That's no bueno.

If you don't properly torque the axle nut to spec, you're going to eventually ruin the bearing. This is one fastener that you don't want to guess with, and apply "gute-n-tight" to.

I replaced my needle bearing with a bushing over a year ago, bought a higher capacity torque wrench just for that repair. May never use it again, but you never know.

Similarly, I now have a torque wrench that goes to 250 ft*lbs... but I'm not sure how that is a solution to someone that doesn't have a high cap torque wrench.

Sure, is the exact torque ideal? Yes. Is there millions upon millions of Tacomas not running the exact torque spec? Yes. Are those bearings likely going to wear out because the torque spec is +/- 20 ft*lbs? Very very doubtful.

I'd love to see what analysis you're referencing that shows this minor deviation having any notable effect on the bearings.

Show us the published analysis/statistic of millions and millions of Tacomas not running the exact torque spec on the axle nut.

The rollers and races in the bearings will eventually wear out sooner, being either too loose or too tight. You don’t want slop where they sit on the spindle, and you don’t want excessive tightness that would compress the bearing assembly.

Why fight and defend against, a prescribed torque specification from the manufacturer? I don’t get it.

PS: I was also suckered into this old post, but am retired so have lots of time at my elbow…
