I had both cv axle boots tear and ended up swapping both cv axels with a brand from advanced auto parts. I drove 4 hours the next day and had to engage 4x4 because of road conditions. I arrived at the hunting camp in 6” of snow, where I backed up to the front door to unload. Went hunting the next day again in 4x4 where I backed into another parking spot. I left hunting and backed up at the camp once again and the inner boot completely twisted up, made an awful noise and then completely ripped apart. I had it towed to a Toyota trained mechanic who put a new one in for me. I picked it up and once again backing up at camp in 4x4 it blew out again! Any body know the cause? I have 3” icon coil overs with the icon UCAs and a 1” diff drop kit. Much appreciated

How long has it been doing this? Like is this new with your lift or did it just start happening out of the blue? Id also check the bushings for the front diff. Maybe they have wore and the diff is flexing causing cv to go negative in reverse.

It just started doing this. The lift has been installed for over a year. I will get pictures but the truck is currently on a tow truck for 180 miles

Sounds like an angle issue from the lift.

doesnt sound like a lift issue to me.. a lift issue will cause it to pop out of the diff a little. My buddy had a 3 gen with like 4" lift and his would pop out .10-15" and we would have to pop it back in. We would only know because it would leak oil but it wouldnt immediately blow up. you will know if the cv is pulling out from the diff. Plus you have a diff drop which fixes most of the angle issues.

the lift is just the easiest thing to point the finger at

Id look into bushings or something that is worn and causing a the cv to break.

First pic you can see the angle is not bad at all… second pic you can see where the cv axle failed

i would also check to see if somehow your 4wd is engaged and you don't realize it or light isn't on.. Go under truck and try to spin front shaft by hand. If it doesn't spin its engaged. If it does spin then it isn't engaged .

The pic where the angle looks steeper is because the axle popped out and is pointed upwards, can see below where the cup is...looks to be the same side to side.

Angles don't look bad to me, weird this is happening

    Diff drop bolts coming loose?

Engaging 4wd and reverse, differential flexes, CVs bind and kapow. Worth checking at least.

I think this is the winner here. From what I'm gathering the original OEM ones just tore a boot, that can happen. The weird binding and popping out only happened once you put the auto store brand in. I recall reading that happening to someone else on here.

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/cv-axle-broken-again.725946/page-2#post-25865721

Typically the auto store ones have a warranty. I would get a new one under warranty just because you're owed one (or see if you can get refunded all together) and either get OEM new, reman OEM from CVJ, or I've had really good luck with Napa ones being put through some good abuse.

Front locker on and eating away with Napa axles. They weren’t exactly under a lot of stress, but still.

OEM on the left is 2” longer than what advanced sold me. I think that’s the problem

The joint that's closest to the diff has a lot of plunge, meaning the axle will lengthen or shorten as needed in the suspension stroke. Hold them the same way as that pic but push downward so the tupil is seated for a more accurate representation of length.
