    I have a 2000 Tacoma, 2.7L, auto hub.

I replaced my cv axles(oreilly brand), lower and upper ball joints(toyota), a few weeks ago due to broken boots, and a lot of free time. Covid...

I did notice that after i installed the new cv axles, i couldn't freely rotate the tires, when the truck was still on the jack stand (full droop)
I didnt think much of it, because when i lowered the truck down off the jack stands, and pushed the truck and there wasn't any sound of binding.

Well i drove the truck today, and when turning at full lock, i hear some popping and binding coming from the cv axle ( which i assumed was the driver side cv, because the boot near the diff was an odd shape).
So first thing i do is get new cv axles. all installed and still have the binding/popping from before. From the video i took, it looks like the cv axle is popping out of the from diff...

    Did i install incorrectly?

when you put the new shaft in did you put pretty good pressure on it? I think there is a little clip that holds that shaft inside the front diff and that's why you had to pry a little to get the old one off.

One of the tri-lobe bearings on the inner joint has popped off. You probably need to open up the boot and tap it back on. It happened to me the very first time I replaced mine. I couldn't figure out the damn problem. Went through 3 CVs before I got one without a bearing dislocated. I opened up one of the bad ones and found the cause.

yes, when putting in the new CV i came to some resistance. I had to tap it with a rubber mallet so that the metal clip would seat.

Loosing one of the lobe bearings inside the rubber boot, would cause the spindle of the CV to bind up and move away from the diff, like in the video i posted?

It causes a lot of binding. It binds at the joint and the joint has to flip over to continue rotating. Mine was binding so bad that I couldn’t even drive it. Yours might just be a little out of place. See if you can squish the boot a little and feel a bearing out of place. It happens if you flex the joint too far and the tri-lobe slips out of the carrier. Then the bearing can fall off.

From the video I would say that the axle was shoved into the differential adequately but somewhere in the following repair you forgot (or somebody forgot) to do something. I have no idea what that would be though. Could also be that the axle is the wrong one for your application.

Jack the truck up and try to pull the wheel directly away from the differential. Give it a good hard yank :jerkoff: (no, not that kind).

So I finally got around to fixing the truck. After dissembling to further diagnose. It looks like you were correct. The bearing fell out, which was making it bind up. I was able to get a replacement cv and everything rotates smoothly. Thanks for the advise.

    I know. :D

The first time I ever installed a cv axle, I got two replacements in a row with the same issue. It was really annoying cause at the time I didn’t know what the problem was. So I uninstalled/installed them about 10x trying to figure out what I was doing wrong.
