I've searched and found several mentions of the poorly designed cup holder retention in these Tacomas but haven't found any real solutions. I drive over an hour each way to work. In the morning I like to have my insulated travel cup and a large mug. The travel cup fits, but the retention parts are going to wear off the paint. The mug doesn't fit without having to manually push the retention in. I can't imagine anyone using these for disposable cups at all.

Has anyone designed a replacement for the cup holders which are a bit bigger and don't have those retention pieces? How is everyone else dealing with these? Yes, I know this is a small gripe but I want to find a way to fix it. Any ideas would be appreciated.

    Thanks

Thanks. That is certainly an option. I was thinking of a full replacement of the cup holders but I bet that would be really involved. Has anyone pulled the center console yet or know how they would be removed to get measurements to build a design?

If i had a 3d printer id make them fit 1 Hydroflask or Yeti its super annoying that there are so many little tiny water bottle holders

The cup holder has probably been my biggest complaint about my truck haha. I have seen a tapered cup insert kinda thing to fit larger cups and a center insert to stop cups from falling over.

Both were not what I was looking for. I asked the center insert company on Facebook if they could design it to cover the factory grips and add some kind of new cup holder grip things. Never heard back.

I can't fathom how these cup holders ever got designed and approved. It's like no one ever used them during testing

The two on the 2nd gen's ahead of the transmission shift grip, and the circular one behind it on the center console (nothing fits it that I have found) are useless unless you're basically stopped in traffic. They don't fit right with any of the Yeti tumblers I have and pull the OEM rubber holder out when you grab it, and then basically just drop it on the floor before you can even get a sip; never to be seen again until you reach your destination unless the Cops stop you for weaving in traffic looking for it. (maybe)

The doors and the two console ones behind the lid??? :facepalm:The door pockets might take an "XXXX" brand water bottle, but then fight you getting it back. Nothing fits them that I have tried: not even a small coffee. Maybe a bottled water brand only sold in Japan? What about that: "Capped bottles only???"

    Whaaaaat???

You'll never win this battle: The kids back there retrieve them, take the cap off, and before even taking a sip, drop/lose the cap and they are gone forever. (until the ants find them.)
    :annoyed:

Your having said that made me go out and look at the rear door cup…er…bottleholders. “It couldn’t possibly actually say that, could it?” It sure as hell does. I mean, not in English, but there’s a little graphic. I want to believe that people wouldn’t be so dim as to put open cups in the door, but then you remember how dumb the average person is and that half the population is dumber than they are!

Yup! The two behind the center console lid says it right next to the top of of the two holders. I'll take a pic tomorrow and add it here. I'm not sure if the 20 oz Yeti's will fit in them or not. Doubt it/Maybe. Never tried or used either of them as reaching back there while driving at speed to grab one would be risky. (to say the least)

I figured out how to remove the console. Now trying to justify the expense of getting a 3D printer and designing a replacement for the cup holder and the trim around the top. In order to justify it, how many on here would be interested in buying it if I can build one that fits larger cups and looks like it came that way? Would have to figure out what the material and time cost would be. guessing I'd need to sell the combo holder and trim piece for around $80-$100 all said and done but maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised.

Even for a print that size, you're only looking at a buck—two at tops. I would guess you're looking at at least a five-hour print time–at least with my Ender 3 V3 KE– which is fairly fast.

The challenge, of course, is the CAD design. Are you using a CAD program now?

Its really interesting that every single car forum I'm on, on every single generation sub-forum, there's at least one complaint about the pee-wee sized cup holders.

Who the hell are you people that insist on carrying around a livestock tank with a mug handle riveted to the side? Apparently its most everyone, I guess.

I printed off a set of the TPU plugs that hold the cupholder "fangs" in. Now my cup is sloppy loose. I'll hold off to decide if I like this or not. But it's a big hole now.

Not currently but have in the past. Planning to get a 3D scanner to have a good starting point and tweak the design a few times (if necessary) to make sure it's a perfect fit.

I looked at the Ender3 but need a slightly bigger unit to print the part flat. It's going to be around 230mm or so wide.
