    Hello all,
I think that this is kind of new, so I'm guessing no one has put one of these on a 2nd Gen yet. I'm also sure that I'm not the only person here that now wants one but can't afford to pay a pro to install it after dropping so much on the crate engineer itself.

    https://cumminsengines.com/repower.aspx

I'm gonna be honest I have never been apart of a diesel conversion, but I want to learn. I'm hoping this thread will turn into and group effort to work out what would be needed to perform this conversion at home. Hopefully this doesn't just die off.

Thanks in advance. Lets do this!

For $9k I can buy ALOT of gas.

Also that's not much tq. Our Gas 4.0 puts out #'s not far from that.
I used to want a diesel so badly. Unfortunately with all the restrictions they keep putting on them, I want one less and less.

mmmm... Thats all low end torque. When you're towing uphill our 4.0s ain't got nothing on diesel. My main thought is that 4.0s lugs quite a bit, you can remedy that by putting a supercharger on it, but now that Toyota decided to ruin everything with 3rd gens and ending the superchargers, superchargers have gone up 200-400%, depending on which a$$ hole is selling it. So if you are like me and already have 190k miles, say if you put up $7000 for a supercharger, you should probably rebuilt your engine as a precaution; well now you're around $10k. And in general, diesel is more reliable, it has less moving parts to go wrong. And from what I hear, it's easier to work on. $10k for a brand new Cummins sounds pretty awesome to me.

So if you don't want more tow capacity or to be able to just smoothly plow through obstacles, then yes the 4.0 is good enough. But if you are stupid enough to want more there's really only two decent options, no matter what its gonna be expensive. But I think this may be the most bang for your buck if we can figure it out.

The market doesnt want a diesel midsized truck. End of story.

Check out the sales figures for the Colorado with the 2.8L turbo diesel. They can't give that truck away.

And if you are a serious tower , why would you even buy a midsized truck? Makes no sense.

If you're not interested in trying to figure out a cost effective way to install the Cummins, then why are you even posting?

There is no cost effective way to put a diesel into a Tacoma. Guess you havent taken the time to search the forum. This has been talked about over and over and....

URD and Magnuson both make superchargers less than 7k.

No you're right, I can't even read in the first place, and then don't even get me started on those difficult search bars. Either way new Cummings crate, therefore new possibilities; but I pretty sure that you have already written several novels about how this exact engine could never be cost effective, even though its fairly new. So I'm pretty sure that no one wants to waste anymore of your precious time. So unless you have a link to post about this specific engine and all of its failures, why don't you just leave this forum for the engineers and overall doers.

It can be legally installed, its just that in some states it wont make the smog requirements for either the whole state (CA) or in some states just the majot metros: like in AZ on Tucson and Phoenix; just happens I have a PO Box in Marana, so its legal for me. But from my understanding its not that it doesn't pass manual emissions, but that its computers aren't compliant with the newer systems. But I have heard that they are working on this and plan to roll that out pretty soon as well.

    TacoCat:
Thanks for posting those links. I'm familiar with them and personally am considering the Magnuson if I can't figure out the Cummins, by the end of 2018. My goal is to save up for and purchase one by next september. But again with 190k miles on my 4.0, it will still be about $10k to do the install the supercharger right. I can install the supercharger, but I'm not really comfortable re-machining the engine.

If you go with magnuson, use the TRD flash. The bully dog flash isn't that good. I just sold my magnuson, and miss it a lot.

How was it paired with the 6 speed? Lots of fun i assume? Also did you upgrade your clutch?

It did great. Seemed a little laggy until it got up into the 3-3.5k rpms, but once she roared into life it would put you back in the seat. The bully dog tune isn't great. It tends to keep afrs on the lean side till it hits open loop for too long. I think general consensus was to make it carb legal and sell it in CA. The trd tune tends to run more rich and goes into open loop sooner. I didn't upgrade the clutch. Only had it on for less than a year. Selling the truck, and putting it back to stock so it's found a new home on another members truck now.

Why not just trade into the Colorado vs dropping 10K into a truck that has 190K and is almost 12 years old?
