cross-threaded ignition coil bolt?

    I have seen a lot of nice handiwork on this newly-purchased Tacoma;

    a dirty black K&N "lifetime" air filter,
    a clogged cabin filter full of mouse nest
    Fram oil filter
    sun-baked shift knob
    leaking valve cover gaskets
    broken wipers

    my latest pleasant surprise was changing the spark plugs and finding out someone previously cross-threaded an ignition coil bolt for one of them,
    the little 10mm hex-head bolt that secures the ignition coil to the valve cover.

    Even when "tightened", the ignition coil is still somewhat free to move around. Though still hopefully seated and on the spark plug.
    The ignition coil bolt doesn't go in as easy as the other ones, which start by hand, so it seems cross-threaded.
    How big of a deal is this?

    Unfortunately I may have thrown away my Craftsman Thread Restorer kit ($50+) when moving and that seems like something that might be able to fix this. Figuring out which dimensions the bolt is to order one restorer bit by itself might be cheaper.

    It's supposed to run through the threads gentler than a sharp tap, and push the threads back into alignment.

    What would TacomaWorld do?

    I’d remove the bolt and run a tap in it.

    Since the valve covers are leaking, and need to come off anyway, I would take the valve cover off, put it in the drill press, drill it out and helicoil it.

    I'd make sure the bolt is the same as all the others (since you mentioned tightening it down and it still feeling "loose"). Then run a tap or pick up a thread restorer through it. Should be good to go then.

    Some people dont like them cause they have a "cardboard" cap inside them. being a major oil filter brand you hear a lot more about failures with them which has led to a sort of "FRAM sucks" following. I personally dont care for them but more just cause for the price you can usually find a better filter
