Looks like the airbag on the A pillar is just to tie in a support for the side airbag as well.

I still find it so weird that crash testing and safety rating is so focused on the small overlap test, which is an extremely rare collision, and gizmos and gadgetry, since you can’t get a five start rating now without blindspot monitoring and computer controlled braking. I don’t really find a vehicle that’s great if I glance off a building or decide to text and drive safer per say but maybe that’s just me.

It's just the most difficult crash to keep the driver safe right?

I've lost so many hours of my life to watching these videos, I find them totally fascinating. I really love the old vs. new crash tests.

No actually, it’s not. The most difficult crash to keep a driver safe is a rollover. While seat belts and airbags make it far less likely someone will be thrown the physics of a jerky roll place extreme forces on the human body. The amount of deaths from rollovers is astounding locally and likely not a local phenomena since the physics of such a collision often lead to spinal injuries.

As for the difficulty of keeping the driver safe in the small offset test, given that most vehicles just added a simple steel box frame piece ahead of and behind the front wheels to score good over previous versions I’d say it’s pretty easy to beat.
A power poll or tree isn’t going to act like a concrete block, the give in both of those objects wouldn’t allow for a hard cab impact. Look I’m all for crash testing but don’t try to sell me on the small offset crash test as being the end all be all it’s put forward as right now. My comment wasn’t that this crash test shouldn’t exist as much as it was a comment that it’s over emphasized because it’s new and something to market around. I get the general feeling that safety is more marketing than reality these days since the large gains from safety systems and design in the 90s are hard to beat significantly.

    Try it and report back...
And you have 25% chance to expire in small overlap crash.
    Statistics bro...

In each case, that driver did nothing to avoid the wreck! So if he is injured, its his own damn fault.

Thanks OP, I thoroughly enjoyed watching that. Very impressed with the Tacoma results. Hope I never experience that, ever.

Where are you grabbing that stat from? I’m curious because the only time I’ve seen it cited was from studies on guardrails back when the design or the rail would literally cut a chuck off of your car if you hit it straight on. The solution was to redesign crash barriers.

The footage there also suggests why Toyota and others remove the A-Pillar grab handle. It looks like your head might get close to that pillar, and maybe you can get a hand or wrist jammed there as everything twists. (Still, I miss that handle...)

Interesting. I wonder if the test is always on the driver's side, so the rotation would always be that direction, hence the passengers handle.

Why would it only be removed from the drivers side if this were the case?
