Hey y’all, I’ve recently noticed a small drip underneath my truck and noticed that oil seemed to be leaking out of somewhere on the front of the engine and dripping down towards the back where the oil pan and front dif are. After taking the skid plate and serpentine belt off to inspect it seems as if it is coming from behind the crankshaft pulley. I just wanted to post a few pictures to get your opinions and whether it could be coming from anywhere else than that front seal behind the pulley. Thanks!

ps: something I’ve noticed while search for the front seal on autozone and other websites is that sometimes it shows a “kit” with multiple seals or ever some gasket. I’m guessing I am looking for only the one large seal alone?

Agreed. That does in fact look to be the crank seal. Easy to do if you follow the links provided by @TnShooter above.

I usually prefer oem also but I’m having trouble finding the part online.

    Fel-Pro used to be ok.
I’ve used their valve cover gaskets.
I used National for my CV dust seal. But that one doesn’t really hold oil in. It just keeps dust out.

I guess you will just have to use what you can get. Parts supply is in a shortage right now.

Yeah the way I see it is that I can always switch it again if I need to lol. I prefer not to but It doesn’t really seem like that intense of a job. I’m just gonna get that one in the kit from autozone!

I just did this on my truck using the National seal. Careful not to nick the crankshaft when taking the old one out. I used a flat tip screwdriver wrapped in painters tape. Worked like a charm.

You're gonna need a way to hold the damper to get that crank bolt off. I had this tool in my arsenal from Amazon $40 from when I installed the supercharger but you can try to bump start the bolt loose with a breaker bar

Yeah I was planning on just bump starting it and doing it that way. I already am gonna have to rent multiple tools(torque wrench, breaker bar).

Or if you have an impact wrench, that'll whiz it right off. Thats the method I used when I needed to remove the crank bolt.

That'll work too but the only issue with that is you have to take the fan and shroud off to get an impact wrench in there.

The Crank Bolt torques to 184 ft/lb
Whether you choose to torque it or not is up to you.

If your truck is a Manual Transmission, put it in gear (4th / 5th) and crank it down.
If you are an Auto Transmission, you need a tool to hold the pulley.
Or send it home with an impact and never tell anyone any different.
(I’d buy the tool, because I have access to a backup vehicle, while I wait for the tool to arrive from Amazon)

Is the tool necessary in order to tighten it down at all or only to torque it to spec? Pretty much what I’m asking is whether the pulley will just spin when I try tightening the bolt down with a ratchet

Yes it will spin if you have an automatic. You either need that tool or crank it down with an impact but that involves removing the fan and shroud.

Got it. I was looking at these universal ones. They seem a little easier to use imo
