I am trying to make sure I have all the tools necessary for the timing belt/crank & cam seal project. I am going to order a cam pulley holder and a seal puller, but is it necessary to purchase a $100 seal driver/installer kit?

I have successfully seated cam and crank seals with a piece of PVC pipe coupling. Obviously it has to be the right diameter. You have to be able to start the seal square by hand, and then gently tap it in place.

Caveat; this has been on other marquees. I've not done a Toyota or a Tacoma specifically. But I can't imagine them being too different.

When I did my timing belt stuff, I thought about those 3 seals but since the engine only had 85k miles on it I shined it on because I wasn't sure
(spelled c-h-i-c-k-e-n-s-h-i-t) about that method .

If I had it to do over again I would probably drill a couple small holes in the seal body, thread in some screws, and try to yank them out that way.

And I would definitely follow Clearwater Bill's suggestion when installing the seals.

Same here. Now I am doing the 180K service and I want to do the whole enchilada. Great tip on the drill and tap seal removal method. I have seen that done on other Garlock style seals.
