So while I'm waiting on a part to finish some motor work I get on a cleaning roll and crawl under. I start moving back cleaning down the transmission and all connections, getting my zerks cleaned, etc. And then I come across just a completely oil & grime drenched component. I'm not sure what it is, (gear box?), but there's clearly a crack (looks like over torque). Anyway, has anyone seen this? Know what this part is so I can look it up? Encountered this and had solutions... I'm wondering if I can change oil, clean + patch cracks to stop leak and buy some time. Thanks.

oh, sr5, 5 speed w/ 253k, i'm maybe driver #3, coming up on 1 year and 3,000 miles under my watch.

*patch with a JB Weld or FITB or something, possibly fiberglass. (not sure if this part is under extreme pressure and extreme heat or not)

so i've found a post about a honda with this issue and JB Weld was used as a temp fix to stop the leak and then a weld was done after about ~9 months (whatever that means? 300 miles? 3000 miles?)

Keep an eye on it watch if it gets worse

Pulling the transmission taking the transmission apart !!

The prep work the 10 minutes of welding

putting it all back together installing it all .

Not bad if you can do all the work if you need to pay.$$$$

Used transmission will be much cheaper

Are you sure it is leaking. The driveshaft will throw grease all over in that area. If it is leaking then yes a good JB weld job might last a while.

tracked it down. front transfer case crack. i just got it all cleaned up last night. so i'll be changing the manual transmission oil this weekend and put some JB Weld on the crack as a preventative and then keep close watch. i've got another weld project on the list so i might try to remove this component and get both welding projects out of the way (depending on how much effort it takes to remove this component)

i may reach out to Yoda Jims and YotaYard in Denver to see if they have a decently priced used manny tranny for the 5vzfe, but i'm thinking that this is something i can get by with a "hack" repair

Looks to be the housing between the transmission and the transfer case . Easy fix if it is as nothing really operates in that section .

yeah i'm thinking it should'nt be a component that is under great pressure or heat. which, imo, makes the cracks a little less ominous

That looks like a casting mark to me. I would drop the tcase first before you start sourcing parts, it may be "normal".

Is that not the transmission case itself ?

That's the trans tail housing, if you take the t-case off you can inspect the inside to see if its really cracked. You can even swap the tail housings instead of a full trans swap if it is cracked.

i'm gonna try a "patch" and keep a close eye on it. not doing into real wheelin, aside from some snow driving, so i'm not super concerned about catching anything on it. if it gets worse over the weeks then i'll start pulling it apart. Spent enough time doing valve covers, plugs, wires, pcv valve, and now changing trans fluid and greasing zerks.

Gotta agree with the Paranoid one . Those marks can be casting lines . They dont normally cross through the bolt pattern like yours do .
With this said , spray the cracks with silver paint and wait for a leak

It looks like there is oil leakage above the crack. Are you sure it is not coming from the opening where the shift lever goes into the transmission? I have those hairline "cracks" on my bell housing, but I think those are casting marks. I definitely see a crack on that flange though.
