I didn't want to hijack thread on cowboy boots. So here's a thread for cowboy hats.

    Let's see yours.

I started with a cheap straw hat this past summer. Just wanted something to try out and keep the sun off my bald head. Bad thing about the straw hats is getting them wet. And I sweat profusely year around but even more so in the hot humid summers here. Didn't seem to mess it up much so we'll see how it does for the full summer coming up.

Once fall arrived I picked up a 2x Justin wool felt in black. Been wearing this one for everyday use
    image.jpg

Then got a Cody James? grey 3x for Christmas. Trying to use this one more as a dressy hat and not wear it for everyday at the office.
    image.jpg

Worst problem I have is finding one that will fit my big watermelon head and I'm finding different hats in the same sizes fit completely different.

Post up your favorites, wishes, tips, hat bands, etc

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
Those days are long past for me .Has to be at least 30 years or so .

I switched to hats I could wear under the welding hood.

At one time that was all I wore. It is good to buy at a store so you can have it shaped just how you want.

In those days so many different manufactures and styles.

I'm not a cowboy and don't want to try to look like one. I usually wear a cap, but there are times when I appreciate the protection of a full brim. I sometimes wear this Stetson

I do not care whether I look like a cowboy. I have worn cowboy hats for years. They provide better protection from the sun than just about any other kind of hat or cap. It is interesting that here in Tennessee cowboy hats are very unusual (I moved here from Arizona).

My old man wears Australian style hats.

He gets skin cancers a lot, and he tries to cover up his head and face.

I’m in e tn and rarely see anyone else wearing one. It’s not rare for people to call me Tex or say “howdy” half smart to me.

I’m definitely not a “cowboy” but do enjoy wearing boots and hat. Most days at work I’ll wear a polo and “tactical” cargo pants with cowboy boots and cowboy hat. I’m sure some people think I’m stupid but I don’t care.

Def more of a south/southwest thing. TX/OK to AZ.

A few people I know wore them back when I was a kid in VA but I think they developed the habit elsewhere.

Had one for a while in HS working a horse ranch, but realized ball caps just worked for me better and with the headrest of the farm trucks.

Here in Texas I see so many I dont even notice them. I could not even accurately tell you how many I see daily, but some days I see more people with them than without them. More in the summer than winter, mostly straw. Likely less cowboy wanna-be and more skin cancer dont wanna be. I suspect the sun and time outdoors may drive a bunch of it.

Part of it is culture, part is practicality. In western states the terrain is more open. In most of the east there is more vegetation. A brimmed hat is in the way more than it helps in most of the eastern states where it offers more protection in the west.

I know several guys here in GA who are big into rodeo. Most are older and retired now but several traveled the country for years competing. Those are the ONLY people I ever see wearing a COWBOY hat. I figure they've earned the right, I haven't. There are times and places where a broad brim is a good thing, but I go out of my way to not look like a cowboy. The Australian type hats are a better alternative IMO.

The one I pictured above is a Stetson but designed as a hunting or shooting hat. The soft crusher type hats are really more practical in most of the east.

Dont take this wrong, but I guess it's definitely culture, I've never heard someone say someone else has earned the right to wear a western hat, boots or belt. Anymore than hearing someone say someone has earned the right to wear loafers and a sport coat.

I'm no cowboy, but I have worn nice boots and nice belts since high school. I wear them to honor my ancestors, they came to Texas in 1850, my great grandfather was a lawman and saddle maker, my grandfather was a farmer, my father worked ranches and settled on being a mechanic and half my uncles were ranchers.

Boots and a hat dont make you a cowboy, they dont make you a wanna be cowboy. They mean you like or respect the culture, or you just like the way you look in them, which really is the best reason to wear them. You make the clothes and not the other way around (IMO)

Not trying to sound snarky, it's just something you find many hold dear for what ever reason.
