My red 2016 Tacoma has the dreaded clear coat deterioration on the top of cab and spotty hood, and I want to repaint it. Prices I am seeing are 800-1200. Does thats seem about right? No body work, just paint and clear coat.

I wish I could get a good ribeye at a restaurant for $5.

The point here is that there's probably $500 in materials alone to paint the hood and roof. Decent quality paint is STUPIDLY expensive.

If you have it painted with cheap paint, the Texas sun will turn your red truck to pink.

$2,000 at any GOOD paint shop.Red is one of the worst colors too have if you live in a sunny state and don't garage it.

I'm in the bodyshop world and can tell you... I've heard that a million times...

It truly depends on the condition of what the hood and cab is - you have BLENDING, so you can match fresh to existing paint. You also have an element of sanding, after all you need that profile for the next coat of paint to grab onto - unless you're cool about peeling. If you're clear is chewed up, there is NO other way to remove it other than sanding. If you're sanding, you'll be biting into the base or color coat. If you sand into the base color coat, you're mowing down layers of paint to a point where you may see " mapping " and if you "map" then you'll need bodywork or filler - at that point you will need a nice coat of primer to fill all those voids and then base/ clear.

IMHO, 800 is a fair and CHEAP price. 1200 is a good, competitive price that will give you a great finish, blends good, and won't have over spray.

If you want to chince out, leave out wetsanding - should save you 65 - 100 bucks... though if you do... it looks like down below....

Also.... coming from the body world... I know whoever owned your car... you didn't wash or wax it frequently... I'v got a 14' w/ excellent condition paint...

Regular washing and waxing goes a long way. I bought my 2012 with some light fading on the roof, and was able to save it with my DA polisher. Been waxing it regularly and havent seen any fading since.

    It honestly sounds too cheap.

Make sure you are getting blending with that price. If they just repaint the panels its going to look horrible.

I’d be nervous about the quote. It just seems too low ball.

Depends where he lives though, prices vary extremely, simply due to location...

Had my hood and roof painted a few months ago at a lower end body shop and all I can say is to ALWAYS FIND A GOOD BODY SHOP. I can’t even begin to explain all the headaches. A 1 week job turned into a 4 week job because of them and the paint is still messed up after them redoing it 3 TIMES. I hope to get it fixed up by a real body shop when I’m home from college.

Magnaflow exhaust, Front and rear Fox shocks, Built-Rite UCA's, Brand new rear leaf springs (thanks toyota). Toyo AT 285's on 16's (for now). Front wheel well frame modification (no rubbing), performance brake rotors. LED ditch lights with CBI ditch light brackets, 4 x Innovations equipment stowage system. Olive drab, IR reflective Humvee paint. Looks black at night.
And there's always the DIY option. After hours of prep, and a full day of painting, mine came out pretty good.20181006_144445.jpg
