My AC went out a couple months ago and recently brought it in to get it fixed from at an independent shop. I was charged $1650 to replace the condenser, compressor, dryer, hoses, as well as to replace the spark plug, spark plug wires, and replace the leaking transmission lines. Was I charged a fair price? I paid but some of my friends said it was too expensive. Thank you!

Sounds like a good price to me. I rebuilt a lot of that myself and paid upwards of 800 for parts alone. As mentioned, there is a lot of labor as well so that seems reasonable these days

That's a lot of money, but that's also a lot of work. Unless you already have the AC manifolds and a vacuum, it's almost always going to be cheaper to source AC work out.

The transmission lines and spark plug wires were aftermarket but the AC parts were from Toyota dealership

Parts alone were about $850, the rest being for 7 hours of labor

I usually do my own work but AC is definitely something out of my realm

good to know, didn’t want to try and tackle it myself since I had no parts on hand, neither do I know anything about AC

Agree it sounds fair. Lot's 'o bits involved there.

5 years ago it would have been too high. Your referenced friends may be stuck in the past.

I believe you are right about my peers being stuck in the past, everything is gonna be pricier, especially when I’m located in Southern California where gas is $6+

I have a 2018 Honda Civic as well and was able to get the AC condenser replaced under a recall. Did your compressor end up going out too?

You should post the bill they actually gave you. We could see how it all broke down by parts and labor.

7 Hours to do your A/C seems a bit much. Your parts costs seem pretty good for a shop. Life is expensive.

I was thinking you're going to be paying at least $1,000 for all of that A/C work with labor, evacuation and R13 recharge and all the OEM parts (smart ) They're expensive: especially a Toyota OEM (Denso back then??) condenser. (Note: there is also a non-dealer "aftermarket" genuine Denso equivalent out there that is much less expensive.) If it was just the A/C work then the price looks a little high... but with the spark plugs, etc and the leaky transmission lines, I think you did good.
