This is really a more general Toyota question but I'm not in any other Toyota forums.

Picked up a new 2023 Tacoma yesterday. When it came time to talk about Toyota extended warranties the finance guys told me the price he was offering for the warranty was only good for today since my truck was new. If I waited to make decision and came back later the price would probably increase because the truck was now used.

It sounded like BS but I wasn't sure enough to call his bluff in the event that it did cost more later. Does anyone know Toyota's policy on this?

    Why it sounded like BS
When I purchased my Subaru the finance people specifically told me that I didn't have to make a decision on the Subaru extended warranty at time of purchase. That I had 30 days to take make a decision. I later found out that, at least with Subaru, you could shop warranty prices at other dealers because you didn't necessarily have to but the Subaru warranty from the dealer where you purchased the vehicle.

Follow up for anyone interested: I called Toyota financial and they verified that the Toyota extended warranties must be purchased at the time of the sale.

Many threads on here where folks have bought extended warranties from other dealers. Even from out of state.

Hate to say it’s completely false. You dont even have to buy from the dealer your purchasing the truck from. IMG_0409.png

I called Toyota financial and they verified it. I'm confused.
To clarify: He said I could buy it later but the price would be higher since the vehicle was no longer new.

You were talking to the finance guys, right?

    Did their lips move?

    They were lying.

Extended warranties exist to put money in the pocket of the seller. The difference between this Toyota dealer and some scammer calling about your car's extended warrantee is, . . . is, . . . I'm thinking, . . . Yeah, nothing. In my work life I spend literally millions of dollars on Apple and HP computers. Apple wants to sell me Apple care with each purchase. Instead of paying Apple I set aside a budget for repairs, because lord knows users will be hard on their computers. :smash: Comparing Apple care with pay as you go is never even close. (and if it was Apple wouldn't sell it) In my personal life I never buy extended warranties. Instead I take the money I would have spent and put it aside. Over the years that pool of "oh shit the <fill in the blank> just broke" money had grown to the point that it can cover just about anything that could break in my house.

The only addition I'd add to this is if you took some of those well-designed computers that don't need a warranty and placed them in the back of my truck while I drove it around who knows where for the next 10 years, I'd probably get the warranty for them. This is the rationale that convinced me to get the warranty on the truck, as it has a bunch of expensive-to-fix electronic stuff on it that I don't trust to last but would like to fix if it fries/dies/otherwise gets busted. But in general I totally agree.

You haven't met my users. The bed of the truck would be an improvement. It would be one thing if car warrantees were sold as the insurance they really are. Instead they're sold with exclusions, fine print, and mark-up as profit centers for the stealership. I remember reading a long time ago that you could buy legitimate car warrantees for far less than what a dealer charges. Couldn't say if that's still true though.

For the OP - I just bought mine at the end of September. As you can see, there are a few dealers that sell factory extended warranties online. Makes sense since it's an easy couple hundred dollars profit for filing the paperwork and taking your payment.

If you go to toyotafinancial.com, you'll see that you can buy anytime as long as the 3/36 warranty is in effect.

    Screenshot 2023-10-07 at 8.05.59 PM.png

Dealers are hit or miss for BS. I just bought my wife a Honda recently, and the dealer didn't offer a Honda extended warranty. I specifically asked "you're a Honda dealer, and you don't sell a Honda product?". Nope. I bought it from another dealer online. GM called (to make sure he got 5 stars on the survey), and I told him they were stupid for passing on free money. He agreed, but said their corporate pushes their warranty...

I knew the price of Toyota's warranty (and it's in the $1500-ish range, give or take). Told the dealer I'd be happy to buy from them at a reasonable price, or would just get it online from somebody else if they didn't want the couple hundred free profit.

I went with 10/100k Platinum no deductible. Retail was $3k, they sold it for $1500.

I normally agree they're not worth it, especially if you trade every 3-5 years; but I'm retired now and this is a long-term item (like my Kubota). Electronics are expensive. That camera behind the windshield? That radar for the cruise? Got fancy LED headlights and whatnot?

$1500 over 120 months is $12.50/month. That's lunch at Taco Bell. That's a fair price just for peace of mind, but one item can recoup the cost easily.

Interestingly, in July I told my selling dealer I planned to get the 10y/125k Pt warranty for $1795 but would buy it from them at purchase time for up to $2k. They said no thanks, $2k was what it cost them.

Not sure where the truth is in what they said about their pricing, but it leads me to think that maybe different dealers get different prices perhaps based on volume. Curious if anybody knows the real answer to this.

The real answer? Dealers lie, and don't like to get caught at it once they commit to it. It makes you question everything else in the deal.

Guy in St Louis was "just being honest, veteran to veteran, that no-one would give me more than $19k in trade for my Frontier". He had lots of reasons, and wanted me to know the other dealer wouldn't honor the $23k offer... I called him and said I was on my way to pick it up, if he wanted to match it (his was gray, the one I bought was white). He stuck by his story, and he lost a sale.

No dealer is online selling factory extended warranties at a loss. Your selling dealer was full of it.

not that it matters much, but is Toyota extended warranty not from in service date?

still fairly inexpensive, but more per month

Extended warranty clock starts ticking at 0 miles / in-service date, regardless of when you purchase it.

I remember reading a similar thread on here or maybe the 4Runner forum. The general consensus was it was not worth it unless is was discounted. Someone in the forum was a Toyota employee offering discount if I remember correctly.

I bought a Kia minivan a few years back and I was offered similar extended warranty BS for $2k, which I bought. I found out it didn't really cover anything that the original Kia warranty did not cover. I also tried to claim a foggy head light and that warranty did not cover it... so I say it's BS warranty.

You were all correct, the dealer was lying. I contacted Irwin Toyota in NH and was offered a much better deal. I would recommend them.

When I notified my dealer that I knew what they told me wasn't true.

    1. I didn't have to buy the warranty at the time I purchased the vehicle
    2. I could buy the Toyota warranty from any Toyota dealer
    3. I could by the same warranty form another Toyota dealer for $1695 less than their price.

    Result:
They are cutting me a check to $1695.

In case this may help others, I got the great quote on the extended warranty from Dennis Marhefka, dennis.marhefka@irwinzone.com at Irwin Toyota in NH.

I bought the $1795 warranty from Jerry a couple months ago. Received the Visa receipt a week later in the mail, and the Toyota warranty book arrived 2 weeks later. Highly recommended.
