My steering wheel is in pretty bad shape. I saw a guy on YouTube called Tacomaholic do a swop to a Corolla MI wheel and it really looked nice. The problem is most of his links etc are no longer active.

Is there a spec sheet or parts list that tells what all is needed for the mod? Such as what wheels, years, etc. will work? Wiring harness swap overs etc. I'm ready to order a wheel I have on my watch list but without the needed info, I'm afraid to move on it.

This Tacomaholic guy has to be a member here. All he offers on YT are Tacoma videos etc. if so does anyone know what his forum name is?

This can be a complicated mod especially if you want all steering wheel controls to work as they should, if you have an aftermarket headunit which is using a steering wheel control adapter this further complicates things.

I have done the mod myself and had to refer to 2012, AND 2015 Tacoma and 2014 Corolla schematics and it took a decent amount of time deciphering where what was and what way the wiring went because the harness from the controls to the clockspring were miswired and the coloring was entirely different. Using a multimeter is an absolute must and you need to understand how to test wiring for continuity to help expedite things.

Long story short, this is not always straight across mod and if any of what I mentioned above sounds unfamiliar to you then you need to be aware that this mod can go south and make you regret what you are doing real quick.

I would offer help, but I did this mod SO long ago that I forgot what the heck I was doing as far as the wiring went because as you could imagine, figuring out where the wiring goes on a 2012 and seeing where it would be on a 2015 (important to retaining some of the extra buttons the 2014-2015 gained) and then cross referencing that wiring to where the 2014 Corolla went got a little confusing really fast. I located my wiring schematics and I easily have some 15 pages worth of highlighted sections on the pin outs for the Z1 plug and the Z4 and Z5 controls to clockspring plug.

@arcenik may have some more information on this.

EDIT: I checked all of my photos and I did take pictures of the harness back in the day at the connector. I am not sure if the photos of the connector was post re- pinning or not, however. I can always take off my airbag off the housing tomorrow and check to see what the wiring looks like in there now and compare them to the photos I have taken already and throw them up so you can see what it looks like. Let me see what I can do, but no promises, because as you can tell there are several variants of clockspring, plugs, and wiring layouts on the plugs. As I said previously, it can get messy REAL fast.

What year is your Tacoma? This will determine how much work needs to be done.

Another option is a salvage yard wheel, sent off to these guys. They did my shift boot and park brake boot. Very nice quality.

Hello, My Tacoma is a 2012 Prerurrer 2.7L Texas Edition. You know the Tacomaholic guy I think had it down to known harness adapters if I understood the vid properly. I feel sure he has to be a member here as the lives Tacomas. I have searched his call name here with no info. so if he is a member he may use a diff call name etc. I'll find and post his video it like most of his material is pretty good.

    Thanks

All of the links from that video for the Corolla iM outer steering wheel shell, Corolla airbag, and regular Corolla wheel were from eBay, so just do a search there for the same key words that were from the old links. Does your current 2012 steering wheel have the stereo controls like my factory wheel in the video? If yes then it should be a plug and play situation since I didn't have to do anything extra for the new controls to function properly.

It is not plug and play for a 2012. Only for the 2014 and 2015. The clock spring And wiring changed from 2012 to 2014. The 2012 only has 2 swc wires and the 2014 has 3. The Corolla steering wheel will need 3 swc wires.

But it could work with minor repining if you get a Corolla steering wheel with less buttons.

Excellent, this looks a lot like the one that I had chosen only minus the flat bottom which I can live with or without but kind of like the sporty look of.

This is encouraging, I actually have a corolla MI in my eBay watchlist.

So are the wheels you’re recommending listed as Toyota Tacoma replacements? And if not are they are not wiring harness adapters required?

I do want to keep my wheel as is as far as the controls are concerned. And I’m not in a hurry. Amor up to want to do things right. Thank you for caring enough to try me and Brother.

The steering wheel frame is common across the 2012+ Tacoma, 2010+ 4Runner, and 2015+ Tundra. All the existing buttons, switches, wiring and plastic trim bits on your factory wheel simply get swapped over.

I swapped in the newer Tacoma controls they fit directly onto the 2012/2023 units. depending on the HU if you upgrade to 2014/2015 you just need to run a light wire and one wire so some of the controls work. Or if you upgrade to an aftermarket same deal. You then also get a newer style like some of the corolla ones same as the Tacoma. The 4runner I believe you can also get in a heated version which ups the anty for cold weather folks.

The Corolla wheel is also smaller In diameter, that was the whole reason I did the upgrade. B5422072-077C-43E7-B989-006190EB4575.jpg

Nice, I was under this impression, but most times I take this kind of thing for granted I end up regretting it. I'm having to run out but I would like to follow up later but soon later. I am ready to order but If it is not asking to much I would like to PM you my selection to make sure I have everything right. I basically want to do the exact wheel that Tacomahaulic has right down to the red stitching and flat bottom. I plan to do the black leather Katskins with red stitching so I think that would be a good match.

Thank you for chiming in, Pearson
