Thanks for sharing. I'm actively checking Craigslist, but I feel like winter is the wrong season.

If anyone is looking to sell one, let me know!

I wanted to put a front hitch on my Gen 2 but couldn’t stand how it looked without the fishing/cooler rack. I settled for a rear rack which I like and found pretty functional.

I just got a 2019, time will tell how I set it up.

I’m building one just like yours as we speak. Anything you’d add or do different?
Coming down in April, June and October.
Anyone ever fish in April? First time fishing that early down there.

Thanks man! It works for me, especially being that I only go for 1 week during the year.

    Things I would do differently:

    1. I would mount a cutting board on it with some aluminum angle.
    2. I would use all 2” PVC to make my rod holders.

Things I did that I definitely like:

    1. I would definitely angle a rod holder on the end for tying on leaders, tackle and bait etc (it allows line to hang down from your rod tip for easy access).
    2. Leave one end open to allow for easy access when loading/unloading coolers.

    Things to consider:

    1. Pay careful attention when attaching your rod holders, be sure to space them far enough apart to accommodate your reels.
    2. Make sure your rod holders are tall enough so that when you mount the rack on your vehicle, the rods don’t hang down below the rack(they will get damaged if you don’t have enough clearance below).
    3. If you install a cutting board, use countersunk screws for a flat surface.
    4. Use all stainless hardware and fasteners.
    5. Cut a notch in the top of your rod holders for the base of the reels to slide into, it keeps your rods from spinning and more stable while riding. (I travel with my rods on top of my camper shell in snowboard racks until I get to the beach. Then they go in the fishing rack until I leave the beach).

I hope this helps. Post your final product if you get around to making one.

I always fish in the fall, so not much knowledge about spring fishing. I hear the bull reds run sometime in late winter/ early spring though.

Attached is a couple photos of the rack I made for my parents which was my second attempt and I like it better than mine.

glue 2” PVC couplers to the tops of the tubes. Gives you smooth finished ends that wont scratch your gear.

I agree, that would make for a nice finish. However, I’ve found that without a notch cut in the holders the rods spin around and bang into each other when riding down the beach/road.

Good ideas and tips. I bought 1 1/2” and 2” pipe and was thinking the 2” pipe was a little to big. Was trying to keep the play down while the rod was sitting in them. I’m going to definitely slot the top end So they won’t spin. Was trying to find a rubber kind of coating like Plasti dip to put on them but haven’t found any yet. I bought a harbor freight rack for 40 bucks off a guy on Facebook. Got some rods coming Friday so I’ll have from 7ft to 12ft rods to make sure I have my heights correct.

Maybe Flex-seal or some kind of rubber bed liner? You could also try a rubber Fernco band, but once you clamp it, may not look as nice... you’ll figure it out.

Post a picture once you get it done!

    Happy fishing!

I was thinking the same thing. I may order some and use whatever pipe it fits. I’d think 2” schedule 40 should be the norm.

Are you a member on SOl or Pierandsurf by chance? I’ve seen the handle before. And since you said “44” instead of “the point” it kinda strung a bell since not many people name the location by number. Ain’t been on either forum in a while though.

I fish the point quite often and 55 as well as 38. My fiancé is “frank n frans” granddaughter.

I am on P&S but not too much anymore. It’s not what it was years ago. I generally make 3 trips a yr to HI. Spring and Fall to fish, and once in the summer for the family. Scoping out retirement possibilities for sure.:fingerscrossed::fingerscrossed:

Agreed, it’s been 5yrs or so since I been on there.

Good luck with finding a place, here soon you won’t have to worry about the bridge collapsing and getting stuck on the island.

Hey guys, I fish the OBX and Southern beaches down to Fort Fisher. I just bought a 2019 Taco OR to replace my Jeep JKU. Does anyone know if a front rod or rod/cooler rack will conflict with the safety sense system? I own both a rod only rack and one that can hold a cooler, it would suck if I bought a front hitch only to find out the truck keeps the brakes applied the whole time or throws warning lights. Thanks in advance.

Are you opposed to having a rear hitch mounted cooler/rod rack?
