Question: What coolant line is the best option to set up a bypass coolant filter on?

It has been mentioned before on this forum, but turns into people telling the poster how it's a dumb idea, and not needed... Thats not what I am looking for. Yes it creates an extra spot for coolant to leak from, but if done correctly, it will not be an issue. The idea is not a revolutionary idea, it is common on diesel engines, as well as V6 gas Jeep systems.

Yes, flushing often is a cheaper option, but I am looking for that extra step. This will be done along with frequent coolant refreshes.

What I have learned so far:

Bypass System is what I am looking to do. Its the safest option- Just in case the filter does get restricted, it will not restrict main coolant flow to engine. Something similar to this design in image below. (Mishimoto system sold for JKs).

Filter selection- no additives. Most filters have additives that time release to promote longer coolant life. DO NOT USE FILTER ADDITIVES ON A GAS ENGINE SYSTEM. (filters without additives: (Baldwin B5134 or Wix 24070)

Thats the thing, no manufactures currently make a kit for the 4.0 engine. So I would have to take that same idea/ part kit, but customize it to the Tacoma.

As in, don't get that particular coolant filter kit? I was not planning on it. Image is only to get idea across of the set up and parts required.

What you are wanting to accomplish by putting a filter for the coolant?

I gotta ask.. what are you doing with your truck that would require a coolant filter and frequent flushes?

What benefits does this provide ? I recently replace my coolant in my 2012 (rad and block drain) , noticed no particulate in the coolant.

Pull contaminates out of the system. So...

    1. Decrease amount of gunk build up in the radiator, hopefully resulting in a longer lasting radiator. 2. Less build up of gunk build up in the heater core.

Overall goal is a healthier and longer lasting cooling system. How much longer lasting, no idea.

So your looking to fix a problem that doesn’t exist.

You are unlikely to see particulate floating in the fluid removed. It gathers in high resistance areas, mainly radiator and heater core. With heat and flow, it is kicked up. Here is A picture of the results a user from Ih8Mud forum got from a coolant filter. Was from a FZJ80 with 1FZ Engine.

Quarter for scale. NOT MY IMAGE.

You’ll probably never need a heater core or radiator, not to that it can’t happen. If you you do normal maintenance I’d bet you’ll get rid of the truck long before you’ll need those parts. Neat idea but it imo not needed.

I’ve seen coolant filter screens in the past. They were always on the line that takes fluid to the heater.

Its not a current problem right now, but down the road it can help reduce problems. Ever
True, it's not "needed" currently. But think it is worth the investigation of trying it, and seeing if the results are worth it.

For most people that is true, but not so for me. I enjoy working on the vehicle, and seeing how long I can keep a vehicle on the road. Just shy of 300K on another toyota I have.

I put 400k on 4 previous Toyota’s no coolant filter on any of them, all still had original radiator and heater core zero issues.

Nope. Heater core and radiator went out on it though. Thats why I think the filter idea could be something to check out.

Fluid moving thru a pipe will eventually wear thru the pipe at it's thinnest point. A filter won't stop that. Just imo.
