My 2006 Tacoma TRD Sport Quad Cab is making a very odd noise at low speed 0-30km/h (it could be happening at higher speeds too and is being drowned out by road noise.

It sounds like the driveshaft is rubbing or squeaking constantly (not like a tire where the noise would only arise once every rotation.

It is certainly not debris in any of my break calipers.

Toyota told me that my entire U-Joint would have to be replaced. I went to a Toyota specific shop in my city for a second opinion, who told me that what Toyota said was complete BS, and that some of the components needed to be lubricated.

The mechanic thoroughly lubricated different parts of the undercarriage (mostly in and around the driveshaft) and said that it should fix the problem.

I drove it home and the noise was still persistent, and was not any quieter. I have now put approximately 100km on it in the hopes it may take time to work, but it has not changed.

Has anybody had a similar problem? I can also post a video showing exactly what is happening if that helps.

    Thanks in advance!

Maybe a stuck rear brake shoe or parking brake dragging slightly?

Stock leafs could squeak. They replaced the silencer pads in mine back in '10 because of squeaking.

Funny you said that, I actually had that a couple of years ago (leaf springs then got recalled). I have since replaced them with the OME Dakar Leafs.

I still wouldn't discount a worn universal joint.
Does it speed up and slow down with speed?
    Have you noticed any vibration?
Have you greased them regularly since new?

Toyota will tell you the drive shaft needs to be replaced, but you can get the universal joints replaced for a couple of hundred ( or less if you do the labor ). beats the 1000+ Toyota wants for a drive shaft assembly.

Speeds up and slows down with speed.

No vibrations or other vigorous noises that should come with a U-Joint "failure".

Haven't been greased regularly, maybe a few times (165,000km)

Toyota told me the U-Joint needed to be replaced, but my guy that I always go to insisted it didn't.

Has anyone tried running it slowly while up on a lift so the source can be isolated?
