I am not saying this information is correct (or that I am satisfied and confident in the answer lol), just what Toyota said and how I interpret it. My question to Toyota was what is the difference between 040 super white or ice cap and 0040 ice cap/does 0040 have clear coat?

Ultimately, I am hoping there is some kind of difference with 0040 that makes my 8/2023 produced truck stronger or more resistant to this issue. I feel for all of the guys out there running into this issue, and hope that we can make enough noise to get Toyota to take care of it.

I have a 2019 OR that I purchased new in August of 2019 and it was manufactured in Texas. My paint looks fine so far but I noticed on my original window sticker the paint is listed as "Polar White". Now when I look on the My Toyota website under my VIN the color is listed as "Ice Cap". Maybe changing the color name will be another ploy to avoid taking responsibility.

I now have my drivers side rear door and 2 areas under the hood. (Engine bay opening)
Also the paint on my roof is basically burnt/faded off all over.
Not too impressed with my first Toyota.
Hopefully Toyota Corp. does the right thing. :fingerscrossed:

I have they said no. Local dealership back in 2020 agreed to pay half for issues and had with under hood, windows.

All was good but now this‍.

Even though Toyota is saying no to everyone, it's still worthwhile to file a complaint. The more complaints the more likely Toyota is going to offer a solution.

Regulations were different back then but my 056 Natural White 2004 4Runner paint is in amazing shape with no failure at 20 years old.

So after I sent some passionate emails and pictures to a Toyota executive, I got some information back that I thought I should share.
Someone from Toyota customer service called my parents (not sure why I didn’t get the call considering the loan is in my name) and basically said that they recognize that there is an issue with the white paint on Tacomas but there’s currently not a fix. But I’m on a list of people to call when a fix comes through and it goes through the corporate approval process

Someone on another thread suggested to email Chris Nielsen (CHRIS.NIELSEN@toyota.com) with your pictures and that’s how I got the response I did. Maybe things are trending in the right direction now

Maybe this guy at Toyota is telling the truth as he knows it. Meaning this might be what came down from corporate and they are using this as the latest excuse, I certainly hope not.
It just seems hard to fathom based on a few facts I have heard. How Toyota one of the largest auto manufacturers in the world not be able to paint a vehicle white and make the paint stick, seems improbable. Second, I believe they are dealing with this issue on other Toyota and Lexus vehicles, why not Tacomas? And finally, why did they change the name of the color to Ice Cap? As I said earlier my truck a 2019 says Polar White on the window sticker and now the Toyota database calls it Ice Cap when I pull up my VIN.

Somewhere in corporate there is a threshold number of complaints per model that need to be reached to take certain actions. Hope they get there soon.

The name is meaningless. The paint code is key. 040 is the former SuperWhite, 041 is the former Blizzard Pearl, which is just an 040 with a pearl topcoat prior to clear coat.

Pretty sure you'll find the new names have the same codes.

But the real root cause is the primer. There are many makes and models that have had this issue since at least the 90's.

You might find post 317 in this thread interesting.

Toyota might consider Tacomas as commercial vehicles since why they don’t care about us .

I agree the name is meaningless, but my lawyer brain tells me the name change may be part of the strategy to avoid fixing the problem. Who knows, just a thought.
