It would damage the (removable) lock and handle mechanism.
But I don't care if you get one.

    I'm not getting these statements.

    Washers on the cable bolt?

    Cut the cable to replace?

It's gonna take a minute to break the SaBellCo off the pivot point.

The washer mod makes the cable unable to be removed from the bolt without using the proper sized torx to remove the bolt entirely.
The manufacturer is speculating on the order of the steps which a thief would take to steal your tailgate. He’s saying they may try and cut the cables (since the can’t be removed easily) first and then see his hinge lock and give up. At which point you would still have your tailgate but need to replace the cables

    Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh!

    Right. Well, that's dumb...in a way.

Cutting the cables and then realizing the SaBellCo is on there.

But then again...it's a thief we're talking about.

Installed ours last night. Took all of about 15 minutes from the time I gathered the tools to putting them away. Very well made, looks OEM and I sleep a little easier.

    Left the cables as-is (thx @DVR @musicisevil).

Thanks for all of the feedback here!

I just looked at Amazon and the Sabellco lock is out of stock and Amazon does not know when it will be in stock. I checked the Sabellco website and it is backordered for 2 weeks. That being said, I saw another one on Amazon called the Tavaski Tailgate Antitheft lock that looks very much like the Sabellco at half of the price. Does anyone have any experience with the Tavaski? Alright doll-face, c'mon and bore me!

I have the Tavaski lock in my grubby paws right now. Looks identical to the Sabellco (not a lot to it, single chunk of machined aluminum with a barrel lock). I'll see if I can install it at lunchtime.

Here's an instructional video for the Sabellco:

    https://youtu.be/ZX7aiNPszy0

Slight bummer that you have to lift up on the tail gate liner to get it on/off.

Followup: I have an aftermarket aluminum tail gate liner that covers more area than the stock plastic one. I'm going to have to trim away a bit of the liner in that corner to get the lock to fit. No biggie, but now more than a quick lunchtime job.

Does the Tavaski say where it is made? The Sabellco boasts of being made in USA, which could account for the cost difference, but even if the Tavaski is made in China, I am interested in whether it’s quality measures up to the Sabellco. I would like to know what you think after the install.

Bwahahaha. You needed to ask? China, of course. There's a blemish in the paint on the inside where the shaft of the tail gate goes. For 50 bucks less, I'll get over it. Oh look! I'm over it already.

My only concern is that the little nubbins that the lock cylinder operates only projects about 1/8" when extended (locked). I'd be interested to know if this is the same on the Sabellco (I'd be willing to bet it is).

As I said, it's a chunk of aluminum, a barrel lock, and that steel piece that projects into the hole described in the video. There aren't a lot of opportunities to cut costs by skimping on quality. Do I know if the two are the same aluminum alloy? No. Does it matter? Probably not. Is this lock cylinder going to hold up as well as the other over time? Dunno'. I'd like to say I'll get back to you on that in a year or so, but since I don't have a Sabellco to compare to, I still won't know.

Well Hell, that was fast. It was in my mailbox today. Got it in 5 days. I ordered a RED one from SaBellco. I guess I'll stop on the way home tomorrow and pick up some cold ones. Pop the top on one and put the lock on and celebrate with the other eleven. :)

Anyone have their sabellco lock rub the bedliner? I just installed mine and it rubs the bedliner when the tailgate is opened. I tried to adjust it but it doesn't seem to help. I'll probably need to grind a few cms off the edge to stop the rubbing.

    @we_want_tacos

Do you have pics of said "rubbing?" (I know jokes can be made about that reply...lol)

Here's how the install went for me...no rubbing:

Once I took the plastic pin out...

Then I had to pull up on the corner of the Tailgate Liner to get the SaBallCo to fit.

    Then put in-place...

    No Rubbing.
