Hey TW, I’ve been thinking of ways that I could restore my 02’ double cabs old plastic interior pieces. Most of them are near perfect but others have deep gouges from 16 years of use.
Not to mention the monochromatic tan is a bit boring.

I want to customize my interior to look professional but above all, be perfectly functional and supremely durable.
In other words, form MUST follow function!!

I’ve seen a ton of ideas and methods for restoring or covering interior plastic but none that are very durable, or professional in appearance.
I do however, love the rugged look and functionality of Bed liner. But it has toxic qualities and is not recommended for confined spaces.
    But...
...Line X isn’t a Bed liner, it’s an industrial non toxic protective coating!! It also happens to be my favorite looking of the “bed liners” available.

If it works I will do the entire interior in military OD green, black, and desert tan.
I think That would look AMAZING!!

Has anyone seen this done before?

I’ve seen plenty of bed liner coated floors and metal parts, but never the oem plastic parts.
Also, line x is applied at a high temperature! Can the plastic take that without deforming??
I also plan to do all the prep work, on the parts myself in an effort to save $$.

    What do ya think?!

Rattle cans simply don’t produce long lasting professional results.
I talked to a guy at a local line x shop and he said for $250 he can cover the same sq ft as a standard truck bed.
I can certainly justify that if it performs and looks totally bad-ass!

Its interior trim not a truck bed... Unless you plan on throwing sharp heavy objects on your dash on a regular basis id think you would be fine.

Vht wrinkle paint isnt spray on bedliner either. Ive used it on intakes and timing belt covers and a few other things. The results are great and its a very strong finish.

If you want something more durable feel free to go with the linex. Its a pretty unconventional usage for it though and i doubt you will find anyone that would know. Maybe ask the linex dealer the temperature that the linex is applied at, then find a spare piece of trim and throw it in your oven at that temperature for 30min and see how it is affected

Most heep guys go with monstaliner or rhino liner in their interiors - make sure the texture is comfortable enough for the interior.

My biggest concern is material thickness when it comes to reinstalling the plastic.
Im not sure if line x can be sprayed thinner in those tight spots.

You could use an emery board or similar device (file, sandpaper on a stick, etc.) to make things fit.

I’ll definitely ask the guy tomorrow about the application temp.
I have hi hopes that it will hold up because automotive plastics are made to withstand hundreds of degrees.
    ...Hopefully enough enough hundreds

Are they non toxic & food safe?
That’s one of the main reasons I chose Line X.

I can’t speak for lines but I’ve worked at 2 places that used different bedliner material very similar to linex and it doesn’t bind very well to any plastic material. And as another user said due to the buildup you will have a tough time reinstalling the panels.

I still intend to have carpet, At least in the front.
I have removed the back seat with the intention of building a platform with crap tons of storage! Something that the 1st gen Tacomas lack..

I expect I’ll have to do some sanding to get them to fit correctly.

Yeah with attention to detail that could be pretty cool! If you do it post up pictures so we can see what it looks like. It got my wheels turning for sure!

Bed liner (line-x) is extremely thick, at least when it's applied to, well, beds... totally overkill for interior plastic parts, and like other said, will likely cause fitment issues for most of the plastic pieces. Which is probably why most people tend to only use in on the floors etc... We're not throwing bricks around on the inside of our trucks (are you?) so the durability of the bed liner stuff is overkill for interiors, IMO.

Plasti-dip has proven pretty durable on my fender flairs (holds up well to lots of brush scrapes, etc...) and the semi matte finish looks really nice, too, which tells me it would be perfectly acceptable for interior parts as well. It's also thinner so more likely to not cause too many fitment issues.

I think the plasti-dip stuff is one of the better compromises between the fugly trucks that look like they were dipped in rhyno-liner, and the purdy show trucks that don't look used.

Rattle can is simply out of the question.

As far as throwing bricks around in my cab...
If it ever happens, I’ll be prepared.
    overkill is ok with me!

Yeah you'll need something that can handle a lot of abrasion in a lot of the parts on the truck where they wear from people getting in and out - that wrinkle paint looks tempting to me, but I've painted professionally in the past and don't mind figuring out things as I go. I'm also a single viking type guy so the non-toxic stuff isn't important to me as if I had a family. The line x would be sweet, but not cheap - as long as the texture isn't too abrasive for skin on door handles etc. and the sheen isn't too reflective on the top of the dash...

I guess I'm just not sure what you plan on doing in your interior where you would want the coating to be food safe... lol... Toxic off-gassing would definitely be a concern, though.

For me it's just cost/benefit. The only parts of my interiors that really see wear and tear are parts of the carpet, seats, and steering wheel. I really don't actually "touch" much else inside. Not going to rhino-line my seats, lol

I might one day rhino-line the inside body like the jeep folks, but that's really only if I keep water logging my rig and my carpet starts growing mushrooms.

Now, if you could do this where I could just hose out the inside of my truck after a wheelin' trip, that'd be another thing entirely.

You’re right, the food safe aspect is a big bonus because of the toxic gasses that other bedliners give off, especially when heated and it gets PLENTY HOT here in TX.

I was in college in 02’ and this was my favorite “daily driver” size Truck of them all, even if it wasn’t available with a V8.
I will never sell this truck so I am currently overbuilding it.
The first thing I wanted to do was to make it as comfortable as possible so I started by investing in the suspension last year.
This year I want to tackle the interior, I also plan to install Corbeau seats, cruise control, scangauge, new carpet, DynaMat, and a bunch of other stuff.

Ultimately I have chosen line X because of the insane durability of the stuff, hopefully a true “one and done” solution! also I think the rugged look of Bed liner Will produce a true WOW factor.

If it looks half as great as I think, and it will basically last forever it will be well worth the cost.
