Hey guys I’m considering a ram 2500 diesel (keeping my taco forever) is this completely stupid? Normally I would never consider domestic but the payload on my tundra was pathetic and I want something that can handle a camper for anyone who had any experience with this truck I would appreciate any input, thanks

Might want to check the actual payload on a few real world trucks. From what I've heard, diesel 2500s don't tend to have much more payload than midsize and 1500s because of all the weight of the engine.

Guys I've talked to who have looked into this recommend getting a 3500 with the high output Cummins and the Aisin transmission (if they still offer it).

More generally, if you're not going to move somewhere that it's legal to delete all the emissions stuff, you need to only drive it on long trips where everything can get up to temperature or when you're otherwise working it hard.

My buddy has a 3500 and looked at the 2500. the 3500 is the payload Ram. the 3500 is the only one i believe that has leaf packs in the back.

The Rebel was only a 1500 model variant, never a 2500.

And if you got a 2500, a gas model will yield a larger payload capacity than a diesel due to the heavier weight of a diesel engine.

Any more questions feel free to ask; have over 11 years of experience as I ran an FCA (now Stellantis dealer) for 2-3 of those years. The remainder was finance director and general sales manager.

RAM Rebel HD was rumored, must be a 24 and would explain why I have yet to see one. Unless RAM is pulling the plug?

I retired in 2020 so can't say, but I had kept in touch with some of my old employees and aside from a bunch of TRX models hitting the lot nothing else changed as far as I knew.

Edit: disregard, it's something new for this year per Google search.

Did they do away with the Outdoorsman? Or maybe the old Powerwagon was axed?

I think it was in addition to the Powerwagon basicly the same thing with more payload and less offroad capability. If RAM is offering both trucks it might be too much, I can see a valid use case for either truck but how much market is there for both trucks? There's supposed to be another variant for next year, maybe a combination of a heavy payload Powerwagon?

Ram, or FCA in general, would sometimes make short-run productions using surplus parts from other makes or models; the Warlock is a great example of that.

This actually came from FCA corporate as they would make these models, and force dealers to take at least 1 if you wanted your allocation of 15 other trucks fulfilled.

The trucks had hit the lots and there wasn't even any advertising on it for the longest, all while the newer model was already out with the refreshed front end and all.

Why do you think the "Classic" was still made? They were manufacturing them for fleet and government sales, while releasing a Classic variant for public sale.

It wouldn't surprise me if this was something similar. Would be odd to run various suspension types though unless they were taking the progressive coils from their standard 2500 models and using those versus the coils used on the Powerwagon.

Can't say since I don't have access to that information anymore to look up part numbers unfortunately.

I had an F150 pulling my 28' toy hauler at that time with about 13,000 lbs I had an eco boost and had plenty of power but had no ass end you know the trailer was back there so I bought a 2018 Ram 2500 ctd coil springs all the way around went with Thuren suspension and delete and truck empty on freeway 75 mph 24mpg around town 19 mpg, with trailer with rzr in the back and bed filled with firewood and it pulls like a dream, going up Wolf creek pass which is a 7% grade I can run whatever speed I want, coming back down with exhaust brake I don't even touch my brakes. It is so nice to get in it to go and have no worries.

I had a 2013 Ram 1500. It was the worst vehicle I’ve ever owned. Wildly unreliable because all the electronics went haywire on a daily basis after 50K miles. I’ll never own another Chrysler/dodge/jeep/Ram whatever they are now product.

I have heard alot of similar stories from other Ram owners.

That being said, that was 10 years ago so maybe they’re better trucks now.

Not certified, but I work on diesels every week at my job. I have worked on the Dodge Cummins 6.7 many times. Head jobs (send out for rebuild), egr cooler replacements, service, etc. The motor is reliable, and I like the design.

I'd look into upgrading the EGR cooler at anything over 50k miles. The factory ones don't last. When they go out they introduce coolant to the egr system. Many head jobs on cummins are misdiagnosed, the whole time it was the egr cooler. When the egr cooler fails you lose coolant, then overheat, then you actually need a head job.

The complaint with dodge 2500 is the motor is great, but the rest of the truck falls apart. All American diesel trucks have their issues. Ford and Chevy pop high pressure fuel pumps, a $5-10k repair. American diesel trucks make it to 300k+ miles, with regular maintenance and a few large repairs.

    I wouldn’t buy a 2500 with a diesel. The 2500 I owned had a 1900lb payload, the 3500 I own has a 4200lb payload with the same cab/bed size.

There are a lot of options in todays market for HD trucks.

    Gasoline market:

Ford offers the Tremor package and have driven one with the 7.3L and 10 speed. Pretty impressive and we averaged 16 mpg on a week long trip in the mountains. The one we were in was the F-350 Lariat plus packaged truck. He has right at 4000 lbs payload.

Ram has the PW (crap payload) and now Rebel. The 6.4L has cylinder deactivation, so that's a no go for me. A couple guys at work have them (one PW and the other is a 2500, both with the 6.4L) and they complain about power a bit. Trucks are at 6-70k miles with little to no issues. Take that with a grain of salt.

GM offers the AT4(x) and ZR2. Now the 6.6L gasoline motor comes with the Allison 10 speed and has been a game changer for the brand and now is competitive with the 7.3L ford trucks.

    Diesels:

Ford still uses the CP4 injection pumps in 2024. If you buy a ford diesel, buy an aftermarket injection system saver. Can't say anything bad though. I have several friends with 140+k miles with little issues...some with over 200k. The FX4 package gets you a rear locker. The Tremor package can be purchased with the 6.7L diesel as well.

Ram offers the standard output only in 3/4 tons. Only one of the domestics that does this. However, now with the Rebel HD you can finally get a diesel in a off-road trim package truck.

GM offers diesel power in ZR2/AT4(x) trucks. The new AT4x trucks have some very nice options now and a selectable rear locker. This might be my retirement truck in a couple years once my current Duramax hits 10 years old.

Here's an example of why not to buy a Dodge. 2015 Ram 1500 with the small EcoDiesel V6. Crankshaft sensor reluctor ring delaminates and falls off the crank, resulting in a stall, extended crank time and CKP codes.

    Resized_Resized_20231018_161045.jpg

    20231018_161745.jpg

The shit is basically glued on like tape weights on a wheel. Dodge's recall fix? Bring the vehicle in and they will flash the software to ignore the crankshaft sensor and go off cam sensor only so it won't stall. No updated parts, no campaign to replace the faulty parts.

Transmission and flexplate have to be removed, it's a 6.5 hour job

Haven't had many issues with my domestic at 100k miles, but I also use a diesel for it's intended purpose.

Diesels don't make great off-road rigs anyway. Heavy, break stuff, dig ruts quickly.

Yeah I agree the rebel looks cool but I don’t know about 80k dollars cool plus I don’t do any towing whatsoever so i couldn’t use a diesel for that. A long time ago I seriously considered a hell cat or demon challenger until I went on the forums and all the owners said their interiors developed serious rattles around 20k miles

Even though your title stated diesel, you placed emphasis on payload in your post.

I don't think people realize the difference between what a diesel offers versus a gas motor of the same chassis.

Towing is one thing, but payload is altogether different, which some may not understand based on responses.
