I’ve seen a lot of recommendations to change your oil at 1,500 miles or 5,000 miles but Toyota says 10,000. Is there any consensus on this? If I do it before the recommended Toyota mileage at a quick lube place will it affect the warranty?

No need to do it early, if you have hard conditions do it every 5000 otherwise 10,000 is fine.

I used to do the first change early but modern engines have good quality oil from factory and there's no need for concern.

    No

No. (Plus how would they even know?)

But it would be tough times before I darkened the door of a quick lube place.

Seriously it's your truck so change it at 1,500, 5,000 or whatever would make you happy. Enjoy your Tacoma, these are great trucks!

Just don't exceed 10K miles between oil changes and you will be fine. Otherwise, it's kind of up to you if you feel you want to do it more often than what is recommended. When I was a young driver, the standard was every 3,000 miles. But tribology (science of lubrication) and engine designs have some a long way since then and 10K appears to be the norm these days with new cars using synthetic oil.

if the warranty issue is serious, they will ask for proof you maintained per schedule. keeping your receipts should
be good enough, though it does not prove you actually did the change, just that you were prepared to.

No consensus. Lots of strong opinions. Some people do 500 miles, since 10,000 miles. I did 10,000.

I just do what the manual says, I figure Toyota knows best lol plus if it’s a new truck the first two years of service is free from Toyota.

I did my first one at 5K. Will probably do 10K or annual changes from now on.

BTW Your ‘Maintenance Required’ message will come-on every 5K Miles regardless of how you use your truck.

Yeah when that light first came on it freaked me out haha, then I realized it’s just a mileage setting.

It’s probably a well known fact but just because it’s not the same as older cars, it may be worth saying: when you take it in for the 5,000 service they do not change the oil. They told me people get all bent out of shape about that because they expect the oil to be changed at every service but our trucks only need it every 10K.

That was news to me when I first got my Taco because it’s been almost 10 years since I bought a vehicle.

I have done a 1500 mile change on all my new vehicles. I have gotten 240,000 + miles on them.

All the points others have made are valid for sure. But I am a what if'r.

There are reasons that they tell you rev limits and speed limits and not driving constant speed and towing on new engines.
The parts are meshing. That means that very fine bits of metal are being worn off, the rings are seating and other stuff. This is then washed by the oil away, and hopefully captured in the filter.

It cost me $75 to do the change myself and took about 20 min. Used amsoil. I also change the rear diff and the M/T fluid. Since they are breaking in also and they don't have filters. I have notices when guys get re-geared that the manufactures recommend that you replace the diff fluid at 500 miles, why? because the metal parts are meshing and this is the time of greatest wear. Now those micro fragments of metal are in the oil to act like an abrasive.

Call me paranoid, these trucks are great and to expensive not to do the simple stuff like change the fluids to keep the wear to a minimum.

While true, that wasn't his question. His question was re warranty because of a short/early OCI, as in

    So my answer and question
    Still stands.

There is no warranty issue for short/early OCIs

Dealer told me to get it in there at 4,000 then 10,000 then 10,000 thereafter.

I'll try to get it in around 4-5,000 and I'll change it out every 5,000-7,000.
It's hot-as-hell in Phoenix so regardless of mileage I'll do it early June every year.

The only time it will affect your warranty is if you don't do the service at least at the intervals in the Toyota maintenance schedule. If you don't do it at the dealer then keep your receipts. You won't get hurt warranty-wise for doing it more often/earlier than Toyota wants. If you're looking for consensus on oil change intervals here, forget it. Everyone has their own opinion, one just as valid as the other. That said, the last place I would do an oil change is at one of those quick lube places.

I am doing mine every 5k, however my personal experience has been not good with quick lube type places. I have learned not to trust them. My advice is if you want to do short intervals and have the means and ability, do it yourself at home. If not, I would just go to the dealer every 10k as suggested by toyota. In other words, 5k change at home, 10k change at dealer, 15k at home, 20k dealer...

First oil change at 5k miles...10k miles after. If it makes you happier at every 5k, thats ok to.
I used change my oil and filter every 20k miles or so in my tundra. It was still running perfect at 292k miles. Imo, changing synthetic oil at 5k miles is a total waste of money, and resources.

Google "tacoma maintenance schedule" and its all on there, every 8000km (I think 5000 miles?) they recommend you take it in for an oil change/service.

Yes they do but they don't change the oil every 5,000 miles. It's on every other service. First 5,000 mile service is a tire rotation, 10,000 miles oil change and tire rotation, etc.
