Confused about Factory Specs on 2001 Tacoma

Hello everyone. I have a 1st gen Tacoma - 2001 Double Cab. I just purchased it and I like it a lot. My brother in law has a 96' that is lower to the ground. I am new to Tacomas so I did not know Toyota had a 16" wheel/tire and lifted version. I am also no mechanic and for the past two days, I have been trying to figure out what trim I have. I'll prob get flamed for my ignorance lol.

With the help of someone on the introduction section of TW, I was referred to Toyota Owners and they gave me the factory specs on my Tacoma. I have attached pictures of the specs below.

I am confused because the grade of my Tacoma is "standard". If you look below at standard installation equipment you will see that it has a 2.7 engine.. etc but it states that it comes w/ 15" wheels/tires.

Above the box, in port/factory installed equipment, I see that my Tacoma had a

    • AA WHEEL AND TIRE UPGRADE #2.
I am not sure what AA Wheel and Tire Upgrade means and cannot find any detail on it.

Does this mean that Toyota upgraded the 15 inch wheels to 16 or is it possible that one of the two original owners of this vehicle did some modification to this Tacoma.

I am really hoping the lift and wheels are all FACTORY stock.
The one on it right now are toyota wheels and 16 inch tires on it. I also notice on the side of the door there is a decal that states that it can run both 15 and 16.

This car has both sr5 and prerunner decals on it. :XScreenshot 2020-06-03 at 10.49.43 PM.jpg

    Easy

    You have an SR5

You also have the added TRD Package (it's an option)

You have factory wheels and judging from the stance, factory height

A Prerunner is everything a 4x4 is, but without the 4x4 meaning no front differential, no transfer case, no axles, and different wheel hubs. Everything else is the same though.

    @benkenobi2

Confirm that there is a button to the left of your steering column

    20200305_141724.jpg

That'd be for the rear locker if indeed you have the TRD package; some people just slap the decal on their trucks

Negative, no RR Diff Lock. I figure it wasn't a true TRD. There seems to be a lot of variations so I am just more concerned whether or not I have a factory lifted and 16" inch stock wheel version or if this was converted by a previous owner.

There is no such thing as "factory lifted"

It's either factory, or it's lifted

The only difference in height with 1st gen Tacomas will stem from the fact that it's either a 6 lug (which is a 4x4 or Prerunner) or a 5 lug (which has different suspension altogether including spring under rear axle)

You could just easily look at the suspension of your own truck; we don't have your truck in front of us

Factory Bilstein 4600's were yellow with a blue boot; if the previous owner replaced them (which they should have, these trucks are so old), hopefully he/she used the same type. If they are not what I described, I'm sure they're "factory replacement" specials from autozone/napa/etc.

If your truck was lifted, whether it was a quality suspension lift or a cheap block kit, you'd be able to see it right away if you walked up to your truck.

Ah thank you for the information. So the configuration that my Tacoma is in now with the 16 inch wheels and tires and the higher clearance is factory? It does have the 6 lug wheels but doesn't state on the specs if it was a prerunner.

The higher clearance is due to the fact that both a Prerunner, and a 4x4 model, share the same suspension

The designation "Prerunner" is as I described earlier; a 4x4 model but without the 4x4 powertrain components

    @benkenobi2

Just realized in looking at your tiny screenshot that you have a 4 cylinder; you very well have the TRD package

You just don't have the locking differential as it was included with the 6 cylinder model

I think that's how I understood the differences too. Not many of those, that's for sure.

I thought I read somewhere that the TRD package only came on manual transmission Tacomas? Mine is automatic so I just figure someone put a decal on it.

Yeah, could be that as well, now that I think about it. Someone else here had a plain 4 cyl auto 4x2 double cab, wasn't technically a prerunner but had that suspension. I think he was on 15s too. So it might have been 15s stock.
Does your odometer seem off? Can you verify it?

A 4 cylinder automatic TRD truck with locking differential was not available to the public, but that's not to say it doesn't exist.

Being in the car business, being the right person, and talking to the other right person, you can make shit happen as a one or two off special order.

We had 1 of 4 or so Viper GTS with a factory 7 stage paint job.

The paint job was a $15k add-on on the factory window sticker.

No, TRD was available on manual and automatic so don't let misinformation confuse you.

The picture of the locker I posted is of my own truck, and it's an automatic.

Also, all double cabs were automatic.

Look what color the shock body is on the fronts and on the rear, that will help us tell you a little more as well

Your knowledge on Tacomas is quite impressive. :D

    They are blue shocks.

I tried a simple google image search to see if any Tacomas matched my description and I couldn't find one that was identical to it in specs. That is why I figure someone threw on the TRD decals.

Far from it, but thanks

If you shined a flash light I bet they're Tokico

Too many Tacoma's out in the real world, and since a lot of them that don't make it are parted out for good money, a lot of trucks won't be "true factory spec"

Plenty of people convert their Prerunners into 4x4, plenty have swapped out their automatic from their double cab and went stick shift, and some have even gone from ADD to manual locking hubs.

I honestly got this truck for my mother. She was actually the one who spotted it and figure we could use a light utility vehicle. My plans are to check out the compression of the engine and things of that nature and leave a reliable truck for her before I ship off.

I'll check again tomorrow if they say Tokico but I think you are right!

So from the horse's mouth I can tell my family and friends I have a TRD Prerunner? :D

Just noticed the Eagle, globe, and anchor on your signature. That is awesome! I am actually a poolee. :D

The information I have received is very helpful. I feel a bit more confident in my purchase so thank you for the ease of mind :D
