Isn't offroading done best with 4x4 ? why does this model exist. Excuse me if this sounds like a dumb question but i am failing to see a point here with this trim.

Depends on the type of terrain, a 4x2 can get by. All the BJ Baldwin "Recoil" videos are done with a 4x2 truck.

Lots of love places don't need 4x4 but people still go off road. I have 4x4 O/R and live in Maryland now, and I love it. I'm from Tampa and we didn't need it there.

If you don't need 4x4 to go off road, your not far enough off the road!

4x2 with a locker will get you 80% of the places 4x4 without a locker will. The 4x2 model also makes for less maintenance and better fuel economy, not to mention they're cheaper to buy. AND easier to lift. Lots of positives.

If I had and AWD commuter car, I would've bought a 4x2. As is, I take my truck to work when the roads are shit.

4x4 just lets you get further out in the woods before you get stuck :)

Before toyota started selling the prerunners, you pretty much had to but a 4x4 to get the kind on ground clearance and suspension travel that's really important for most off road terrain. There's definitely places that 2wd won't cut it, and it's good to know the limitations of your vehicle, but the guys who think you need a 4x4 to leave pavement or handle weather are generally either from big cities in warm areas, or need to justify the cost of their own choices to themselves.

Even the term "prerunner" comes from off road racing. Well before toyota started selling them to the public, lots of racing teams had 2wd trucks built with the same suspension as their 4wds and used them to scout/run the courses before the actual race.

OP would be surprised at how capable a 2WD is off road . The Locker on the OR could come into pay as well. For the so inclined there are some nice dirt trails a 2WD can transverse.

On a similar note, I just saw a Tundra TRD with oversized wheels and really low profile tires...what is the point of that?

From a technical standpoint, better road manners and lighter overall weight, possibly contributing to better mpgs.

    From a cosmetic standpoint, IDFK.

    for most "truck" applications, tire>wheel

For true off-road capabilities, you shouldn't go bigger than 17" wheel. You need the sidewalk to flex and deform for traction. Low profile tires will most likely flat easier as well.

Techride is correct though. Less sidewall flex on road is better.
