I don't have a winch and occasionally carry a come along and snatch block. Usually not for recovery but to clear the logs off the road.

Depends on how long you want to stay stuck on those rare occasions.

I have a Wyeth-Scott “more power puller”. Synthetic line, can’t remember what the pulling/deadlifting rating is but it’s plenty. It’s a workout to get unstuck with it, but it works. It’s a big step up from using a high-lift a couple feet at a time. I think they are around $350-$400 but they are simple and effective. I’m not sure it’s possible to break it, unless you cut the line. It’s not something you want to get stuck just to test out though, even with the mechanical advantage its a back shoulder and arm workout. Winch would be nice, but I can’t justify one for my needs.

If you get stuck once in a day, a comealong would probably do it. That second getting stuck is gonna suck though.

I have a come along in my truck that I bought to pull a non running sedan onto a car trailer, it was hard work and I cannot imagine using it for much more then that, I keep it cause I already own it but would not consider it a valid recovery tool, especially if I were going off roading on my own.

I'm old and dont have time to mess around, or be sore for a week (more sore than usual). I would go with a winch.

I’ve seen a come-along fail to recover a vehicle on 2 occasions. Come-alongs are 0 for 2 in my experience. Both come alongs ended up breaking.

One vehicle was just stuck on some snow and the other was half in a ditch off the side of a forest road. I’d consider a hitch mounted winch if you want to avoid a hard-mounted winch but I think come-alongs suck for recovery

The come alongs that I like for their form factor are a ton and a half, the 2T come a longs are burley and their chains are heavy. That said, Ive drug my truck w my 10k winch without even groaning.

A come along is entirely not a recovery tool, it's a "come-a-long" a motivational too to encourage something that almost wants to go to actually get to it, something small like a atv up a trailer or such.

It is *NOT* up to the task of recovering a truck from a stuck.

A hi-lift jack *can* be used as a winch and I have recovered my own truck with one from a good stuck and boy what a bitch that was. A winch would have had me out in minutes rather than hours of digging stacking repicking and I wouldn't have broken a sweat where as I 'bout broke my back.

Get a winch. Better in every way and truly indispensable at times, sometimes really nothing else will do.

    This.

The come-a-long isn’t a recovery tool. It’s best used to supplement a winch, but if your stuck in sand, rocks, mud, snow, etc then the come-a-long isn’t going to get you out on it own. I’ve seen 8-10k winches stall out on a fairly basic pull with our trucks. Now you’re think a 1k-4K manual come-a-long is going to get you out of that? Good luck.

So far I have pulled out three cars and one truck and one SUV with this. I'm shopping for winches right now and I'm thinking "I have never actually been stuck myself?"

Never got stuck because I had no winch or recovery gear then I got a winch, and now I go a little further and further and every once in a while either I have to get winched out or I have to to winch them out.

Looking for a 8-10k winch, just delaying the paying for it. LOL

That's why I got a winch. Push the limits of the truck and find out it's strengths and weakness, but still be able to self rescue.
