I bought this 98 2.4l 4 cyl Tacoma a couple about a month ago and I have been having issues with it starting when truck is cold. Once the truck has been warmed up, the truck starts normal. Also once it starts black soot spits out the tailpipe.

since I got truck. I replaced a bad battery (thought it was the issue at first), I changed the spark plugs, spark plug wires and the ignition coils. I had never seen a check engine light, so I didnt think of checking the codes. I dont know if the check engine light is broken or nom existent, so I pulled out my obd reader and got those codes.

When I tried unclipping the what looked like the 1 pin engine coolant temp sensor it came out too easy and fell apart. Now I need a new clip. The new sensor is $25 at autozone son Im heading out to buy one and hopefully they sell the clip too. What else should I look at? I already cleaned the maf sensor when I first got the truck. Is it true the intake air temp sensor is part pf the maf in these trucks?

The MAF sensor might be shot, as well as the coolant sensor, or the wires are compromised. I would replace any sensor with OME parts, if available, aftermarket parts are crap IMO. Check the IAC, EGR and TPS as well.

the 6 cylinder has 2. one is for the ECU, the other is for your temp gauge on the instrument cluster. the 4 cylinder is probably the same.

I know the 2.7 has two sensors, not sure about the 2.4.

The second sensor might be located in the rear of your engine… that’s where it is on the 3rz…

do you mean two coolant engine temp sensors? There is a coolant temperature guage sending unit sensor up front by the ignition coils. See picture

duralast may call it a switch, but its a sensor. see below the "fits you vehicle" section. the one on the 5vz fe looks just like that, it may even be the same sensor. toyota uses it on several engines. on the 5vz, the one for the instrument cluster is near the firewall. the one for the ECU is upfront near the water neck for the radiator hose.

The one for the instrument cluster wont trigger a check engine light. your needle will just stay stuck on cold.

Glad to report this issue has been fixed. My car now cranks and starts right away. I am glad as I was worried it was much more serious.

when I first bought the truck, I thought it was just the battery. In a way it was. Battery was bad and replaced. Issue still persisted. Next I went with a tune up. Plugs, wires, coils. Still the same issue.

Truck did not show a check engine light so I never ran my obd scanner on it. Do these gen1s have a check engine light? I do mot see one.

Showed 3 codes mentioned on the original post. Started looking for the coolant temperature sensor and instead I found the temperature switch with a broken connector barely plugged in. I found the connector at my local dealership for the switch and fixed that. Nothing changed.

Next, I kept looking for engine coolant temp sensor and found it by the firewall. Moved harness a bit out of the way and it was completely disconnected. The connector was brittle and pretty much damaged. The temperature sensor also was damaged after removal. I replaced sensor with an autozone part, and spliced in a new connector. Starting problems, finally solved! Starts perfectly every time and no codes.

idles a little rough at first but very briefly. What should I look at now?
