B1422 is the error code that the local dealership, Maguire Toyota of Ithaca, NY, told me required entire AC compressor replacement. Wrong!

If the sensor is working correctly, then it indicates that the compressor is not rotating, or is rotating at a rate different from what it should. So the system responds by shutting down the AC in order to protect against further damage. Your AC isn't working - you take it to Toyota - they tell you to replace the compressor for $3,200.00.

However, what if the sensor is bad? You get the same behavior, and you get the same answer from Toyota - replace the entire compressor. But that's not necessary - all you need to do is replace the sensor for a fraction of the cost.

Toyota doesn't give you the option of replacing only the sensor. Why? I don't know. replacing the entire compressor (with attached sensor) certainly fixes the problem. But it's an enormous cost, and unnecessary. I was able to find an independent shop that diagnosed the sensor and replaced it, thereby fixing the AC. More info in attached document.

    Good luck -

    Guy

Do you know if replacing this sensor requires the ac system to be evacuated? Or can the sensor be replaced without loss of refrigerant?
